Guan, 14, remains in Asia-Pacific Am lead

China’s Tianlang Guan continued to impress Friday at the Asia-Pacific Amateur. The 14-year-old shot 8-under 64 at Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok, Thailand, to take a five-shot lead after 36 holes.

Guan is at 14-under 130. He held a two-shot lead after shooting 66 in the first round. Thailand’s Prin Sirisommai and Australia’s Oliver Goss are in second place at 9-under 135.

The Asia-Pacific Amateur’s winner earns an invitation to the Masters. The winner and runner(s)-up earn exemptions into International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship.

Sirisommai shot 65 Friday after playing his first seven holes in 7 under par. He followed a par at the first hole with eagle at the par-5 second and five consecutive birdies. He double-bogeyed the final hole, though. Goss, a quarterfinalist at this year’s U.S. Amateur, also made eagle at the second hole and shot 65.

Hideki Matsuyama, winner of the past two Asia-Pacific Amateurs, shot 69 Friday and is at 4-under 140. Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan shot a bogey-free 67, eight shots better than his first-round 75, and is at 2-under 142. Pan is No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
