Rory McIlroy comes into the Deutsche Bank Championship ranked 36th, so he’s got two tournaments to beef up his chances of making a second straight Tour Championship. But regardless how that quest shakes out, he knows he’s got a full plate of golf still ahead of him.

McIlroy will have either three or four weeks off after the PGA Tour season concludes before he hits the ground running. On the same weekend that the PGA Tour will kick off its 2014 season (Oct. 10-13), McIlroy will tee it up in Korea at the CJ Invitational hosted by K.J. Choi. He’ll take a week off, then play twice in a row in China, at the BMW Masters and the HSBC Champions, then have another week off before competing in the DP World Championship in Dubai.

After another week off, McIlroy will close out his season with appearances in the Australian Open (Nov. 28-Dec. 1) and the very next week at Woods’ end-of-year gathering at Sherwood CC in California, the Northwest Mutual World Challenge.

No, the World Cup (Nov. 21-24) at Royal Melbourne isn’t in the picture. Things are too congested and it just doesn’t appeal to him.

What does tickle his fancy, however, are these FedEx Cup playoffs, which he concedes have altered the landscape a bit. “They give you an incentive (at the end of the year). Guys had an incentive to make the Tour Championship (before), but it seems like it was always the same guys in a way.”

“Obviously it’s not just the money. There are big world-ranking points and these are prestigious events.”
