I just played in the AJGA HP Boys Championship in The Woodlands, Texas, at the Club at Carlton Woods, and I won!
It is my second AJGA Invitational win and I had a lot of fun doing it! I shot rounds of 70-71-70 and won by one over Scottie Scheffler and Peter Kim. I guess my new Nike Covert woods helped a little bit!
A few weeks ago at the Jones Cup, I realized how my mental game was hurting me. To play against the best amateurs in the country, you have to be mentally strong. I found that I was beating myself up and looking at results too much. So, I worked with the mental coach we have at the Jim McLean Junior Academy, Fran Pirozzolo, and my instructor, Joey Wuertemberger, before the AJGA HP.
I focused on keeping my emotions even and staying in the moment. It really helped me even when I had a couple of big numbers on the second day. I have to admit, the change in my mental game is what won the tournament for me.
It was another awesome tournament – they always are with the AJGA. The best part of the week was the glow golf, remote control cars and the Ferraris that were on display. There were so many fun things for us to do outside of the competitive rounds of golf.
I think I had the oldest fan at the tournament. Jan and her father, Chester, came out to watch me play. Chester is 100 years old and Jan pushed him around in a wheelchair both days just so he could watch!
Carlton Woods is an awesome course that was in perfect condition with incredible facilities. I can't wait to be there for the 2014 HP and 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur.
The AJGA HP Boys Invitational honored our soldiers during the tournament. I especially want to say thanks to the Tee It Up For The Troops organization and to our U.S. Armed Forces who do so much for our country. Carrying the special bags with the American flag was an honor.
My next tournament will be the Terra Cotta Amateur in Naples, Florida, in April. Then after that it's the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley! April's going to be an awesome month! I'll be preparing really hard for the next month to do well at those tournaments and try to notch another win.
Thanks for reading and Boomer Sooner!
P.S. The OU golf team just finished first and second in its first two spring tournaments, respectively, and they're playing great! Better watch out for those Sooners!
