Jose Mendez of Costa Rica won the Callaway Junior World Championship on Friday by finishing 72 holes at Torrey Pines’ South Course at 5-under 283. Mendez, who will be a freshman at Minnesota this fall, opened with 4-under 68, then cruised through the rest of the week with rounds of 71-71-73.

Defending champion Rico Hoey, the USC signee from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was part of a three-way tie for fourth at 1-over 289. Hoey gave up ground with a third-round 79.

In the top girls division, Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City, Hawaii, shot 9-under 279 to win by seven shots. Galdiano, 15, made headlines two years ago when she played the U.S. Women’s Open at The Broadmoor as a 13-year-old.

Loui Daniella Uy of The Philippines was second at 2-under 286, and Amy Matsuoka of Newport Beach, Calif., was another shot back in third.
