McDonald defeats Feng for North & South title

Mississippi State's Ally McDonald gets a hug from athletic director Scott Stricklin during the third round of the 2013 Women's NCAA Championship.

Two months after finishing the NCAA postseason with a flourish, Ally McDonald has added the North & South Women's Amateur title to her resume. The Mississippi State junior charged through the match-play bracket at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort, finishing off junior golfer Yueer Cindy Feng, 3 and 2, in Saturday’s final match.

McDonald took an immediate lead over Feng on the opening hole, and had extended it to 3 up by No. 7. Earlier on Saturday morning, McDonald beat Columbia’s Michelle Piyapattra, 2 and 1, in the semifinals while Feng beat UC Davis grad Demi Runas, 4 and 3.

McDonald, who won the NCAA Central Regional and tied for 10th at the NCAA Championship, also defeated NCAA champion Annie Park and former USC player Cyna Rodriguez earlier in the week.
