Fitzpatrick takes low-amateur honor at Open
Bound for Northwestern in the fall, Matthew Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England, saved his best for last with a final-round 72 to take low amateur honors at the Open Championship.
One of just two amateurs to make the cut, Fitzpatrick finished at 10 over to outdistance Jimmy Mullen of Devon, England, by five shots.
The honor adds to an already-impressive resume for Fitzpatrick, who won last year's British Boys Amateur, finished second in last year's Berkshire Trophy and finished eighth at this year's Junior Invitational at Sage Valley.
Fitzpatrick carded three birdies in three of his four rounds this week, scoring 73-76-73-72—294. Sunday, he was even par with two birdies and two bogeys through 13 holes before a double bogey at the 14th narrowed his advantage over Mullen to four shots. A par, followed by a birdie at the 16th, set his margin for the low-amateur honor.
Northwestern finished last season at No. 41 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior rankings.
