Tyler McCumber, a University of Florida product, added another state title to his resume on Sunday with his victory at the Florida Open. The three-day event was played at Quail Valley Golf Club and Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club, in Vero Beach, Fl.

McCumber, who won the Florida State Amateur in 2011, carded rounds of 69-68-67 to beat his closest competitor Nyasha Mauchaza by two shots. Mauchaza, who led after the first and second round, finished alone in second place after firing an impressive final-round, 7-under 65.

Starting the third round, McCumber played aggressive and consistent golf with front-side birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7. Heading to the back McCumber played close to perfect racking up four straight birdies on Nos. 11-14.

After missing the green on the par-3 12th hole, McCumber chipped in for a birdie building his lead to four strokes and forcing the rest of the field to play catch-up.

Never looking back, McCumber continued his aggressive play. With birdies on holes 13 and 14 he further separated himself from the field. McCumber finished his victorious round at 12 under.

β€œI felt really comfortable all day, I was hitting it good and putting it well,” McCumber said. β€œIt was great to finally see my putting come around.”

With this win, McCumber, who is the son of PGA pro Mark McCumber, achieved his first win as a professional.

Chase Seiffert, the defending champion, finished tied for third with Rod Perry. Robert Geibel, finished in fifth place as the low amateur after posting a 7-under total of 209. readers: We value your input and welcome your comments, but please be respectful in this forum.
