Will Murphy, a rising senior at South Carolina, defeated Sam Burns of Shreveport, La., in a three-hole aggregate playoff to win the Sunnehanna Amateur on Saturday. Murphy and Burns finished the tournament at 6-under 274.
In the playoff, Burns, 17 and an LSU commit, bogeyed the first playoff hole (No. 1) at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa., while Murphy made par. At No. 2, both players made bogey. On the final playoff hole, the 241-yard par-3 seventh, both players hit the green and two-putted for par, giving Murphy the title.
In the 2013-14 season for the Gamecocks, Murphy collected two top-5 finishes and added three top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments. The Sunnehanna Amateur was Murphy’s second amateur title in four months. He also won the Azalea Invitational in March.
Local favorite Nathan Smith, the 2011 Sunnehanna champion and a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur winner, made a late run. He birdied Nos. 13-15 to take sole possession of the lead, but bogeyed 16 and 17 to fall into a tie for third with Xander Schauffele of San Diego at 5-under 275.
