Yin defeats Esther Lee; Scheffler still stands at Polo
Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Scott Scheffler, stroke-play medalist at the Polo Golf Junior Classic, was among the players to survive the first two rounds of match play on Wednesday at PGA National Golf Club. The field was narrowed down from 32 boys and 32 girls to the top 8 players in each division.
Scheffler took down Parker Derby, 5 and 4, in the morning then defeated Junior Ryder Cupper Cameron Champ in 20 holes in the afternoon. He’ll face No. 8-seeded Rigel Fernandes on Thursday morning.
The winner of the Scheffler-Fernandes match will face the winner of a match between Brad Dalke, No. 10 in Golfweek’s Junior Rankings, and Matt Gilchrest, No. 31.
On the other side of the bracket, the two quarterfinal matches will be between Benjamin Griffin and Ben Dietrich, and Scott Jaster (who defeated third-ranked Robby Shelton) and Adam Wood.
In the girls division, the biggest upset belongs to Angel Yin, who took down stroke-play co-medalist Esther Lee in the Round of 16. Yin, who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open in July, defeated Lee, 2 and 1, and will face Casey Danielson in the quarterfinals. Alexandra Kaui also recorded an upset, defeating No. 3-ranked Alison Lee, 1 up.
The other stroke-play co-medalist, Player of the Year Ariya Jutanugarn, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Alexandria Harkins and Amy Lee. Jutanugarn never had to play past No. 15 on Wednesday.
Other quarterfinal matches include Bethany Wu against Eri Okayama, Jutanugarn against Simin Feng, and Kaui against defending champion Nicole Morales.
