LA QUINTA, Calif. – Doug Pool and Jeff Burda entered the Golfweek Senior Amateur at PGA West as the hottest players in the field. After the first round, they control the top of the leaderboard at the famed Stadium Course.

Pool, from Las Vegas, posted a 1-under 71 on a calm, 97-degree day on the Pete Dye-designed Stadium Course, which is No. 7 among Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play in California.

Pool played a nearly flawless round, stayed patient and took advantage of the calm conditions. He had four birdies and three bogeys, continuing his consistent play from last week when he finished T-9 at the Society of Seniors’ Masters.

“I’ve had a slight flaw in my swing and sometimes I’m not sure where the ball is going,” Pool said. “Luckily I think I got it straightened out now. Hopefully I can keep it going in the second round.”

Jeff Burda from Modesto, Calif., trails Pool by a single shot. Burda won the Society of Seniors’ Masters last week, and opened the event at PGA West with an even-par round that included four birdies on the front nine and four bogeys on the back.

In the Super Senior Division, top-ranked Ted Smith continued his steady play with a 1-under 71. In the Legends Division, Robert Wernick from Rancho Mirage, Calif., built a 2-shot lead on Michael Mahoney with a 3-over 75.
