Matt Kuchar built a 4-up lead through nine holes and held on as Hunter Mahan made a furious charge on the back-nine, winning the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, 2 and 1.

The win is the first WGC victory for Kuchar and first overall victory since the Players Championship last May.

Mahan did not win a hole until the 10th, but did win four holes on the back-nine to make the match interesting.

Jason Day defeated Ian Poulter, 1 up, to take third place.

Off the tee: Mahan finds a large fairway bunker on the right side of the fairway. Wasn't too happy with that swing. Kuchar does the same, nearly coming to rest right next to Mahan's ball.

Approach shots: Mahan's ball is a bit buried in the sand (about 1/4 of the ball is covered), and his second shot finds more desert, headed toward a bush. Kuchar's second shot comes to rest about 3 feet behind the hole.

Around the green: Mahan tries to hit out of the bush and advances it about 2 feet. His fourth shot settles 5 feet under the and he concedes the hole and the match.

Off the tee: The final par-3 of the day, Mahan hits a solid tee ball that settles just on the fringe, about 30 feet behind the hole. Kuchar's tee shot flies the green and hits some stands at the back of the green, bouncing behind those stands.

Around the green: A nice shot from Kuchar, hitting a big flop that settles about 15 feet right of the hole.

On the green: A two-putt from Mahan gives him a simple par and puts Kuchar in a must-make situation. Kuchar can't answer, however, and his lead is now just one.

Thru 16: Kuchar, 1 up

Consolation match: Jason Day buries a 10-footer for par on the 18th to close out Ian Poulter, 1 up.

Off the tee: The drivable par-4, Mahan takes aim and the ball fades a bit too much and finds the right rough. Kuchar also goes after it and comes up about 10 yards short of the green.

Around the green: Nice pitch shot by Mahan leaves him about 6 feet for birdie. Kuchar makes a mistake on his pitch, trying to hole it and sending it 10 feet past.

On the green: But Kuchar is up to the task, barely getting the ball there, but draining the birdie putt. Mahan also makes to stay two back with three to play.

Off the tee: Kuchar uses driver and finds a bunker on the left side of the fairway. Mahan ropes one right down the middle of the fairway.

Approach shot: Kuchar goes from sand to sand, hoisting a very high shot that finds a greenside bunker. Long bunker shot upcoming. Fantastic second shot from Mahan, who sticks it about 2 feet to the right of the cup.

Around the green: Kuchar plays a great bunker shot to about 3 feet, but loses the hole after he conceded the birdie to Mahan.

Thru 14: Kuchar, 2 up

Consolation match: Ian Poulter has won both Nos. 16 and 17 to cut Jason Day's lead to 1 up.

Off the tee: Both players find the fairway at the last par-5, with Mahan a bit farther down the short stuff with a 340-yard drive.

Second shot: Kuchar pushes his second shot a bit right and will chip up the green with his third. Mahan pulls his second ball and finds fairway left of the green, where he'll have a tough chip across the green.

Around the green: Solid shot from Mahan that runs about 18 feet past the hole. Kuchar's third shot stops about 4 feet under the hole.

On the green: Mahan misses his birdie putt just left and picks up par. Kuchar makes his birdie putt, hitting the left edge and falling. Back to a three-hole advantage.

Off the tee: Mahan is making a comeback, sticking his tee ball to about 6 feet left of the pin. Kuchar also hits a nice tee shot, leaving himself about 10 feet under the hole.

On the green: Huge putt from Kuchar here, sneaking his birdie putt in on the left edge. A little fist pump too. Mahan makes, but has to be disappointing to get a halve after that great tee ball.

Off the tee: Mahan finds the fairway at the par-5 11th while Kuchar pushes his tee ball into the right rough.

Second shot: Kuchar has no choice but to lay up and finds the middle of the fairway with a long iron, while Mahan gives his second ball a ride, only to find the rough around a fairway bunker, leaving himself an awkward stance.

Third shot: From nearly 180 yards, Kuchar comes up short of the green, narrowly missing a bunker on the right side of the green. Mahan takes his time with his tough position right outside a bunker, but it pays off as he puts it about 6 feet below the hole.

Around the green: Kuchar's pitch settles 3 feet to the right of the hole.

On the green: Mahan sneaks his birdie putt in on the left side to cut Kuchar's lead to two. It was Mahan's first birdie of the final match.

Off the tee: A pair of fairways hit here, with Mahan sending it about 40 yards farther.

Approach shot: Using a fairway metal, Kuchar leaves it just short of the green. Mahan uses long iron from 190 yards and just gets it on the green, about 30 feet under the hole.

Around the green: Kuchar plays a so-so chip to about 12 feet under the hole.

On the green: Mahan simply smashes his birdie putt, sending it 10 feet past the hole. Kuchar can't get his par putt to drop and picks up a bogey. Mahan makes his par putt to win a hole for the first time on Sunday afternoon.

Off the tee: A pair of poor tee shots here, with Kuchar finding the desert and Mahan holding up in the long rough.

Approach shot: Mahan definitely has the advantage, but his second shot goes off the back of the green and will have a tough chip back to the pin at the front. Kuchar is able to get his ball in the same vicinity of Mahan, so it'll become a chipping content.

Around the green: Two incredible pitch shots, with Kuchar getting inside of Mahan at around 2 feet. Mahan concedes Kuchar's putt, but Kuchar makes Mahan putt. Mahan makes for a halve.

Off the tee: Kuchar blasts his tee ball up the right side at the par-5, while Mahan plays a low-liner that travels up the left side of the fairway. Nice tee balls from both.

Second shot: Kuchar gets after the green and runs the ball right past the hole and off the back of the green. Really close to hitting the flagstick. Mahan drops his club after his shot, sending left of the green and into the rough. Tough 40-yard shot to come.

• Around the green: Mahan hits a nice third shot and it sticks on the green, about 12 feet left of the hole. Kuchar hits an even better one, leaving himself 3 feet for birdie.

On the green: Mahan's putt lips out and Kuchar makes his, extending Kuchar's lead to four.

Off the tee: A monster drive from Hunter Mahan that travels nearly 360 yards. Kuchar gets caught up in the left rough.

Approach shots: Kuchar finds the green, but is on the back again and will put all the way down the green for birdie. Mahan plays a nice sand wedge to about 10 feet right of the hole.

On the green: Kuchar's birdie attempt is a great one, stopping about 2 feet from the cup and he is conceded the par. Mahan can't get his birdie attempt to drop and he also pars.

Thru 7: Kuchar, 3 up

Consolation match: Jason Day makes a 10-footer for par to win the 9th hole and take his first lead in the match, 1 up.

Off the tee: Kuchar nearly picks up a hole-in-one, running just past the hole and settling 3 feet behind it. Mahan finds the green, but will have 30 feet from under the hole for birdie.

On the green: Mahan three-putts and concedes the hole Kuchar. The match is quickly getting away from Mahan.

Approach shot: With fairway metal, Mahan blasts it up the left side of the fairway, coming up short of the green. Kuchar doesn't take advantage, finding a greenside bunker on the right side.

Third shots: Mahan plays a nice third shot to about 8 feet past the hole, while Kuchar blasts a bunker shot to about 2 feet.

• On the green: Kuchar's par is conceded and Mahan can't get his putt to drop, giving Kuchar his second consecutive hole.

Approach shot: From just over 100 yards, Mahan comes up short of the green. Poor shot from the defending champion. Kuchar attacks the flag and it settles on the fringe, about 12 feet from the hole.

Around the green: Mahan chunks his chip and leaves himself about 20 feet to save par.

On the green: Mahan can't get his par putt to drop and Kuchar wins with a two-putt. It's the first time in 169 holes that Mahan trails in a match at Match Play.

On the green: Mahan can't get his par putt to drop and he picks up a bogey. But Kuchar can't take advantage, pushing his par putt to the right.

Second shot: Kuchar lays up after choking up on his fairway metal, finding the left side of the fairway. Mahan gets after the green, but comes up short and in the right rough.

Third shot: From about 110 yards, Kuchar puts it about 25 feet under the hole, while Mahan goes about 25 behind the hole.

On the green: Kuchar's birdie attempt cuts under the late and he picks up a two-putt par. Mahan's birdie attempt is about 2 feet short and he also pars. Another halve.
