No, 2009 wasn’t the best of seasons for the Rhode Island entry of Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon. The former decided it was time to put a halt to his playing career; the latter continued to struggle with his game.

But showing why they have been given honors for their off-course generosity, Faxon and Andrade consider last year a rousing success. The Andrade-Faxon Charities for Children distributed a whopping $321,135 to 52 charities, its highest annual dollar amount since it was founded in 1994.

“We try to lessen the burden of hunger and illness so kids can be kids,” Faxon said.

“(We) believe this is the right year to dig deeper and fund as many requests as possible,” Andrade said.

The PGA Tour veterans began funding their charity efforts for Rhode Island causes through a one-day pro-am 16 years ago. In 1999 they took it to the next level, working with CVS to put on a two-day team event featuring 20 professionals.

With the meter still running, the AFCC has distributed more than $4 million. It might not have helped their 2009 money-list standing, but it validates the respect they have been afforded all these years.
