LAS VEGAS – It’s not uncommon to see hats being autographed and then worn at PGA Tour events.
Only thing is, usually golfers do the signing, not the wearing.
But on this occasion, Nick Watney figured an exception had to be made. We’re talking Jerry Rice, after all.
“I grew up (in California) and the first thing I can remember from the 49ers is Jerry Rice,” Watney said. “So once I saw him on the tee . . . I was definitely going to get his autograph.”
It was pro-am day at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and while Watney was with host Timberlake, Grant Show, and Andy Garcia, an array of offensive football greats were right behind him – quarterback Doug Flutie, running back Emmitt Smith, and Rice. They were with Marc Leishman, who, being an Aussie, may not have known the sort of company with whom he was paired. Watney sure did.
He secured Rice’s autgraph on his Titleist hat and proudly wore it all day.
He also was very diplomatic when asked about Rice and those great 49ers teams.
“I think Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver of all time,” he said, “and Joe Montana is the greatest 49er.”
Well done, Nick.
