Looks like Annika Sorenstam will take part in next year’s Solheim Cup after all, as one of two assistant captains for Liselotte Neumann. The ever-popular Carin Koch rounds out the Swedish trio that will lead the European team Aug. 15-18 at Colorado Golf Club.
Sorenstam, who also served as an assistant captain in 2011 for the winning Euros in Ireland, turned down the role of captain for this go ’round, saying she wasn’t ready for such a big commitment. The Hall of Famer played in the Solheim eight times from 1994 to 2007.
“Lotta has been a friend of mine for nearly 20 years and actually inspired me to follow my dreams when she broke through and won the U.S. Women’s Open in 1988,” Sorenstam said.
Koch holed the winning putt at the 2000 Solheim at Loch Lomond and went unbeaten in eight Solheim Cup matches in 2000 and ’02.
“Lotta was my first role model in golf,” said Koch, “and she will be a wonderful leader for the team.”
U.S. captain Meg Mallon named Dottie Pepper as her first assistant captain.
The Solheim Cup teams will be named at the conclusion of 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews.
