No. 15 Stanford
2011-12 Golfweek rank: 35
Go-to girl: Sally Watson
Season outlook: Stanford has a good mix of old and new talent, plus a new coach in Anne Walker, formerly the head coach at UC Davis. Still, it remains hard to predict how quickly those changes can make Stanford a true power in the Pac-12.
Stanford finished 24th out of 24 teams at last season’s NCAA Championship, but got there courtesy of a T-5 at the NCAA West Regional, where the Cardinal spent much of the early week in the lead. Sally Watson, who will represent Scotland this fall at the World Amateur Team Championship, and fellow senior Kristina Wong return as team leaders, while juniors Marissa Mar and Danielle Frasier also provide stability. Mariko Tumangan, who was second to Watson in scoring average, is the lone sophomore, but it’s the freshman class that truly looks promising. The Cardinal welcome one of the top 10 freshmen in the country in Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale, Ga., plus local talent Lauren Kim of Los Altos, Calif.
If Stackhouse and Kim transition smoothly and Watson and Tumangan play to their potential, Stanford can compete with Pac-12 opponents such as UCLA, USC and Arizona.
