Three was the number for the New Mexico men’s team as it notched a season-opening victory at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 9.
It was the Lobos third tournament title in their last four events dating to last season.
New Mexico won the Mountain West Championship and the NCAA Columbus Regional last spring before falling in the match-play quarterfinals at the NCAA Championship.
Monday’s victory at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn., came by six shots over runner-up Baylor. Kent State was third, nine shots back, while Cal, playing without Michael Kim and Michael Weaver, was 11 shots behind in fourth.
The Lobos lost three senior starters from a year ago, but junior Gavin Green and freshman Andrej Bevins stepped up in the season opener, finishing third and T-13, respectively.
