East Tennessee State won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate by double digits on Tuesday after a final-round rally.
The Buccaneers closed a 36-hole Monday at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C., on a high after junior Rhys Pugh, a member of the GB&I Walker Cup squad, aced the 126-yard 17th. It was the fifth of his career and his first at East Tennessee State. At 19-under 557 for 36 holes, the team trailed North Carolina-Greensboro by three shots. Pugh was tied for third.
East Tennessee State outscored Greensboro by 14 shots with a final-round 2-under 286. The team’s 21-under 843 was 11 shots better than Greensboro. It’s the Buccaneers’ first victory of the season.
Greensboro freshman Carter Jenkins won the individual title with a 13-under 203 (65-65-75). East Tennessee State’s Gudmundur Kristjansson was second, two shots back. He was one of four Bucs golfers in the top 11, including Pugh, who finished fifth.
Host North Carolina State finished third as a team at 1-over 865, and East Carolina was fourth at 7-over 871.
