Illinois’ Stephanie Miller became the first freshman in 21 years to win an individual title for the Illini with her victory Oct. 13 at the Diane Thomason Invitational.

The last Illini freshman to win a tournament outright was Becky Biehl at the 1992 Big Ten Championship.

Miller posted rounds of 74-70-69 for a 3-under 213 total, winning by 10 shots over runner-up Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas.

“It felt amazing,” Miller said in a school release. “It was the first time I’ve had a 54-hole score under par and I hit the ball pretty solid and made some putts and had some nice low scores. I played out for the win and it was just a bonus to my three good rounds.”

Illinois also won the team title, besting second-place Kansas by five shots. The last time Illinois captured both the team and individual titles in the same event was at the 2012 Westbrook Spring Invitational.
