Austin Connelly shot a final round 3-under 67 Friday to claim the FJ Invitational at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Connelly, a 2015 SMU commit, shot a 9-under 271 total in the 72-hole event for a six-shot victory over K.K. Limbhasut of Loma Linda, Calif. Limbhasut will attend California in the fall.
“It was a great way to start off summer,” said Connelly, who has the Rolex Tournament of Champions and the North and South Amateur coming up on his schedule. “I played really well, just tried to keep calm and play smart all week, and it paid off.”
The Irving, Texas, native had six AJGA invitational top-10 finishes heading into this tournament. This is Connelly’s fourth AJGA victory but first invitational. He also won last year’s Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Championship and two Junior All-Star events in 2010.
Six players tied for third, including incoming Texas A&M freshman Cameron Champ, North Carolina-bound Benjamin Griffin and Illinois signee Nick Hardy at 1-over 281.
