Recap: Rickie Fowler wins Players title on 4th playoff hole

Rickie Fowler went 6 under in his last six holes, survived a three-hole aggregate playoff, then sank a birdie on the fourth playoff hole, the par-3 17th, to win the 2015 Players Championship Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.

Fowler, Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner each finished at 12 under before playing the first three-hole aggregate playoff in tournament history. Fowler and Kisner birdied the 17th and advanced to the 17th again after Garcia missed a birdie putt at the 18th.

After Kisner missed about a 20-footer for birdie, Fowler sank his short birdie try at the 17th to win the tournament.

Update No. 46, 7:52 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler hits one in tight at the 17th and after Kevin Kisner misses his birdie putt from 20 feet, Fowler sinks his 5-footer to win.

Update No. 45, 7:43 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler pounds his drive at No. 18 and has 109 yards left. However, he misses the green. Kevin Kisner also comes up short in two while Sergio Garcia has a birdie putt from about 20 feet. Fowler chips close and Kisner nearly holes his birdie chip. Garcia has a chance to stay alive, but misses his birdie putt.

Update No. 44, 7:28 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler hits his tee ball at the 17th to about 6 feet while Kevin Kisner is inside of 10 feet. After Sergio Garcia missed his long birdie putt, Kisner sinks his birdie try. Fowler then responds with a birdie of his own.

Update No. 43, 7:18 p.m.:

All three players go right off the tee at the par-5 16th, and all three end up with pars.

Update No. 42, 6:46 p.m.:

Kevin Kisner hits his approach at the 18th to 9 feet, 7 inches. However, he misses the putt and instead, there will be a three-man playoff with Kisner, Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. The playoff will be a three-hole aggregate playoff and include Nos. 16-18.

Update No. 41, 6:42 p.m.:

Ben Martin ends his chances of winning, hitting his drive right at the 18th before closing with bogey to finish at 11 under.

Update No. 40, 6:35 p.m.:

Kevin Kisner, who fell in a playoff to Jim Furyk at the RBC Heritage a few weeks ago, birdies the 17th from 15 feet to join Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and Ben Martin at 12 under.

Update No. 39, 6:26 p.m.:

After Bill Haas leaves his long birdie putt on the lip at the 17th and remains at 11 under, Ben Martin makes his birdie attempt to reach 12 under.

Update No. 38, 6:17 p.m.:

We have a tournament, ladies and gentlemen. Sergio Garcia sinks a birdie from about 45 feet at the 17th to join Rickie Fowler at 12 under.

Update No. 37, 6:16 p.m.:

Bill Haas hits his second shot inside of 10 feet at the par-5 16th, but misses the eagle putt. A birdie moves him to 11 under. Ben Martin also birdies the 16th to move to 11 under, and there are now three players a shot back of Rickie Fowler.

Update No. 36, 6:07 p.m.:

Sergio Garcia makes a two-putt birdie at the par-5 16th to move back to 11 under. He’s one back of Rickie Fowler with two holes left.

Bill Haas makes back-to-back birdies, at Nos. 14 and 15, to move to 10 under, where he shares second with Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, Ben Martin and Kevin Kisner.

Rickie Fowler sinks a 17-footer for birdie at the 18th hole and he goes 6 under in his final six holes to finish at 12 under.

Update No. 33, 5:30 p.m.:

Sergio Garcia bogeys the par-4 14th and is now a shot back of Rickie Fowler, who leads outright at 11 under and is in the fairway at the 18th.

Update No. 32, 5:26 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler has tied Sergio Garcia for the lead after making a 7-footer for birdie at the par-3 17th. Garcia, meanwhile, had to take off his shoes at the par-4 14th and is in trouble on the hole.

Update No. 31, 5:18 p.m.:

Here comes Rickie Fowler. Fowler gets a good bounce with his second shot at the par-5 16th, and he eagles the hole to get to 10 under, a shot back of leader Sergio Garcia, who just missed a birdie attempt at the par-3 13th.

Update No. 30, 4:56 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler sinks a 15-footer for birdie at the par-4 15th to move to 8 under. Also, Rory Sabbatini climbs to 9 under after he gets a 45-footer for birdie to drop at the par-3 17th.

Update No. 29, 4:43 p.m.:

Rory McIlroy has a 12-footer for birdie at the par-3 17th, but can’t get it to fall and he remains at 8 under, three shots back of leader Sergio Garcia.

Update No. 28, 4:30 p.m.:

Rickie Fowler birdies the par-3 13th from 12 feet to move back to 7 under overall and even par on the day.

Also at 7 under is Bill Haas, who has bogeyed three straight, at Nos. 7-9.

Sergio Garcia taps in for par at the par-5 ninth to turn in 3-under 33 and with a two-shot lead at 11 under.

Update No. 26, 3:32 p.m.:

Sergio Garcia holes a 6-foot birdie putt at the par-4 sixth to move into sole possession of the lead at 11 under.

Update No. 25, 3:22 p.m.:

Sergio Garcia hit a 25-footer at the fourth for his second straight birdie, taking a share of the lead at 10 under. Justin Thomas also dropped a nice putt at the fifth hole, making a 26-footer for birdie to get to 9 under.

Update No. 24, 3:09 p.m.:

There’s a four-way tie for the lead at 10 under, as Kevin Kisner and Bill Haas joined Ben Martin and Chris Kirk for the lead.

Sergio Garcia hit a 6-footer for his second birdie of the day, reaching 9 under and a share of fifth.

Update No. 23, 2:53 p.m.:

A birdie at the second puts Ben Martin at 10 under, even with Chris Kirk for the lead. After parring the first, Kirk is on the par-5 second looking for a birdie of his own.

Bill Horschel came within a stroke of the lead with two early birdies, but a three-putt bogey at the sixth has him back at 8 under.

Rory McIlroy made the turn in even-par 36 after making one birdie and one bogey.

Update No. 22, 2:06 p.m.:

Bogeys for Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy put them back at 6 under, with Fowler’s coming at No. 1 and McIlroy’s at No. 5.

Jamie Donaldson birdied the 11th and 12th to move to reach 5 under on the day and 8 under overall, two shots off the lead.

Update No. 21, 1:20 p.m.:

Brian Harman opens with consecutive birdies to move to 8 under and within two shots of the lead, while Rory McIlroy takes advantage of the par05 second to reach 7 under.

Jamie Donaldson and Hideki Matsuyama are moving up the leaderboard early Sunday. Through seven holes, Donaldson is 4 under and 7 under overall, while Matsuyama is 3 under today and 6 under for the week.

Tiger Woods finishes his tournament with a roller-coaster 72 that included five birdies, two bogeys and a triple.

Tiger Tracker (Through 14): Tiger’s momentum quickly fades at the 14th, where he sends his tee shot left into the water hazard. He’s back to even par on the back after a triple bogey at 14 erases his streak of three straight birdie. Tiger came up short of the green on his fourth shot, and then needed three more to get in after a poor pitch left him with a lengthy putt.

Elsewhere on the course: Sangmoon Bae birdies his first two holes, jumping into a tie for 26th at 5 under.
