Cal's Collin Morikawa closes with 62 to win Sunnehanna Amateur

In his first year at Cal, Collin Morikawa showed a knack for going low. On Saturday, the rising Bears sophomore exhibited that flair in the final round of the Sunnehanna Amateur.

“I felt like I could make every putt out there,” said Morikawa, who fired an 8-under 62 to finish at 11 under and win by three shots at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.

He held off fellow Cal teammate K.K. Limbhasut, who shared second with Garrett Rank at 8 under. Ohio State’s Will Grimmer and Illinois’ Dylan Meyer tied for fourth at 6 under.

“You look at the field of this tournament, it’s amazing,” Morikawa said. “Better players keep coming out here and it’s one of the best tournaments to start the summer, so I’m excited to win.”

The amateur golf season is just getting started, and many of the players in the Sunnehanna field will make the trip north to Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I., for the Northeast Amateur, which begins next week.
