Brazil’s Victoria Lovelady gains spot in women’s golf at Rio Games

Victoria Lovelady made it after all.

The Brazilian golfer earned a spot in next month’s Rio Olympics when the teams were finalized Tuesday, the International Golf Federation confirmed.

Lovelady joins Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow, who will be playing under the Irish flag, and Morocco’s Maha Haddioui as late additions. They were granted spots when the Netherlands’ national Olympic committee opted not to enter its two qualifying athletes, Christel Boeljon and Anne Van Dam. New Zealand also chose not to enter Cathryn Bristow. Philippines’ Dottie Ardina declared herself unavailable.

Lovelady, who grew up in Rio and played college golf as Victoria Alimonda at USC, will join Miriam Nagl in representing the host country as golf returns to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

On the men’s side, Italy’s Francesco Molinari, Colombia’s Camilo Villegas and the Philippines’ Angelo Que withdrew. They will be replaced by Italy’s Matteo Manassero, Portugal’s Jose-Felipe Lima and Mexico’s Rodolfo Cazaubon.

The men’s tournament will be played Aug. 11-14, followed by the women’s on Aug. 17-20 at a new course designed by Gil Hanse. Sixty players will compete in 72 holes of stroke play in each tournament.
