Noah Goodwin, Paphangkorn Tavatanakit lead AJGA All-Americans as Rolex players of the year

Seven holes into his opening round at the Junior PGA Championship in August, Noah Goodwin couldn’t take the pain anymore.

“It felt like somebody was stabbing a knife into my back,” said Goodwin, who was forced to withdraw and was later diagnosed with a strained left latissimus dorsi.

The injury was a low point for Goodwin, Golfweek‘s top-ranked junior, this year. However, it was the only low point.

Goodwin, a 16-year-old from Corinth, Texas, was named 2016 AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year on Thursday, joining 11 others as first-team AJGA All-Americans. Paphangkorn Tavatanakit of Bangkok was named the girls’ player of the year.

“When I outlined my goals at the beginning of the year, I listed two: to be the Rolex Junior Player of the Year and to be on the United States’ Junior Ryder Cup team,” Goodwin said. “I am proud to have accomplished both of these goals.”

Goodwin was runner-up at the U.S. Junior Amateur in July and also made match play at the U.S. Amateur in August. He won his fourth AJGA title earlier this year, at the Bishops Gate Golf Academy Junior at Horseshoe Bay, and added three top 5s in AJGA invitationals – second, Ping Invitational (he broke the tournament’s 18-hole record by four shots with a 9-under 63); T-2, Thunderbird International Junior; fifth, CB&I/Simplify Boys Championship.

He also was T-5 at the prestigious Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, and was a members of victorious Wyndham Cup and Junior Ryder Cup teams.

Goodwin, an SMU commit for 2018, is ranked No. 1 in all three major junior-golf rankings. Tavatanakit tops all three girls’ junior rankings.

The 17-year-old Thai won two AJGA invitational in 2016, the Ping Invitational with a record score of 12-under 204 and the Rolex Tournament of Champions. The UCLA commit also tied for fifth at the Yani Tseng Invitational and advanced to the Round of 16 at both the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Girls’ Junior.

She is the first female from Thailand to be named Rolex Junior Player of the Year since LPGA star Ariya Jutanugarn won back-to-back honors, in 2011 and ’12.

“This award defines the best player in junior golf and I didn’t dare to dream about receiving it because of the many talented golfers capable of winning this award,” Tavatanakit said. “Winning this award means the world to me.”
