TPC Boston playoff event renamed (again) to Dell Technologies Championship

By

The second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs has a new identity.

The former Deutsche Bank Championship will be called the Dell Technologies Championship beginning in 2017, the PGA Tour announced Wednesday. The name change does not mean a move in venue, though, as the tournament will stay at TPC Boston, located in Norton, Mass., and keep its Monday finish on Labor Day.

Deutsche Bank has been the title sponsor since the tournament’s inception in 2003, but it had already made been made clear that this past year would be the end. In fact, the tournament’s future title sponsor had been announced as EMC last month, with that change going into effect in 2017.

But EMC and Dell recently agreed on a merger deal that merited the new name change announced Wednesday.

This group will also be the main sponsor for the Tour’s annual match-play event, with that tournament being named the Dell Technologies Match Play.

The TPC Boston event, which Rory McIlroy won last month, will continue as the playoffs’ second leg, holding a 100-player field that will whittle down the postseason to 70 golfers.
