John Daly to play in 2016 PNC Father/Son Challenge

If you watched ESPN’s recent “30 for 30” documentary on John Daly (“Hit It Hard”), you got an intense glance into the the two-time major winner’s “Wild Thing” days as a fast-living, drinking, frequently disruptive force on the PGA Tour.

But there’s another, softer, gentler side to John Daly, and never is it more on display than when he is with, or talking about, his children. His youngest, Little John, will join his dad in December as the Dalys make their debut in the PNC Father-Son Challenge at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla.

Also committing to the Dec. 8-11 tournament is Jack Nicklaus, who will be playing the Father-Son for the 15th time, joined this December by Jack II.

“I was looking at the incredible field they have assembled again this year,” said Nicklaus, an 18-time major winner, “and I see several fathers who are actually younger than my son (who is 55). At a combined age of 130 years, is it too late for us to ask for shots?”

Hall of Famers who are playing include Bernhard Langer (playing with his daughter, Christina); Nick Price (with son Greg); Nick Faldo (with son Matthew); Lee Trevino (with son Daniel); Curtis Strange (with son David); and Raymond Floyd (with son Robert).

In March, as Little John walked alongside him at the Puerto Rico Open, Daly beamed about his only son, who turned 13 this summer, and his boy’s love for the game. He said Little John was going to school and playing golf pretty much every day, taking on slightly older players in weekend “meets.”

“I don’t force it on him,” Daly, who turned 50 and joined the PGA Tour Champions this season, told Golfweek. “I don’t think you should force anything on a child, unless it’s a necessity. He’s just a good kid, and he loves to play golf.”

Not that the elder Daly is necessarily the younger one’s first option as coach.

“If I go out and he says, ‘Why am I hitting it so bad,’ then I’ll help him,” Daly said. “But I don’t do anything to his golf game unless he asks me. I may say something and he’ll say, ‘Well, my coach told me different.’

Laughing at the mention of that, Daly added, ‘I’ll say Son, I’ve only done it all my life. But that’s OK.’ ”
