Rory McIlroy dishes on fiancée Erica Stoll, takes swipe at Wozniacki

Rory McIlroy is holding nothing back these days, including dishing on his relationship with his fiancée, Erica Stoll.

It seems the best way to get to him to talk about Stoll is to ask about his breakup with his ex-fiancée, Caroline Wozniacki.

In a two-part interview with the Paul Kimmage of the Irish Independent, McIlroy said that the biggest reason why he and Stoll have clicked it because she was “living a normal life” when they met.

The subject came up three hours into Kimmage’s conversation with the No. 2-ranked golfer in the word.

“The thing I love about it,” he says, “is that we were friends before anything romantic happened. We met when she was working for the PGA of America, and renting a condo in Palm Beach, and I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’”

Ouch.

He continued:

“I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world. And that’s why I feel in such a good place now. I don’t feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her; there’s no bulls–t, no acting, no show.”

OK. We get it.

This week, a rib stress fracture left McIlroy unable to compete in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and could potentially hamper his preparation for the Masters.

One thing is certain, he won’t be getting any sympathy cards from Wozniacki.
