Fantasy golf rankings: 2017 Farmers Insurance Open

By

The PGA Tour heads down the California coast to the San Diego area for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Tiger Woods will make his PGA Tour season debut this week, and he’ll do it among a star-studded field that includes World No. 1 Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama.

To help you with your fantasy-golf lineups, Golfweek ranks its top 25 players in the field.

• • •

1. Jason Day: World’s top-ranked golfer missed the cut last year after winning Farmers in 2015. He was T-2 in 2014 and T-9 in 2013; he also missed the cut and didn’t finish better than T-35 in his first three starts here. His is making first start since he finished T-12 at Kapalua in return from 2016 back injury.

2. Dustin Johnson: Played last week in Abu Dhabi and tied for second. Before that, he was T-6 at Kapalua and T-3 at the Hero in the Bahamas. His Torrey Pines record, though, isn’t sparkling: Since a T-3 at the 2011 Farmers, Johnson hasn’t finished better than T-18 in four starts, which includes a missed cut in 2015.

3. Brandt Snedeker: His victory last year in brutal weather conditions was his second triumph at Torrey (he also won in 2012). He owns three other top-3 finishes here. He missed the cut in last start, at the Sony Open, but it’s the first one he had missed since last June’s U.S. Open. He won in Fiji during the fall, was T-6 at the Hero and T-14 at Kapalua.

4. Hideki Matsuyama: His T-27 finish at Sony snapped a streak of six consecutive starts with either a win or a runner-up finish (Justin Thomas is the only player to beat him). He rested last week to prepare for Torrey Pines, where he has missed his last two cuts since tying for 18th in his debut in 2014.

Brookes Koepka

5. Brooks Koepka: His recent form is stellar (T-13, win, second), but he only has one previous start at Torrey (T-41, in 2015). Still, it’s very wet, he’s very long, and he has a game that should get it done around here.

6. Jimmy Walker: Disappointing (and surprising) MC at Waialae, on a course where he’s won twice. But he’s done well at Torrey. He was T-4 last year and T-7 in 2015. (He was also T-4 in 2013 and T-8 in 2012). Yeah, he’s had some good ones here.

7. Phil Mickelson: He has three wins at this event but none since 2001, and his recent record isn’t great (three MCs and a WD in his last five Farmers starts). Game looked solid last week in Palm Springs in his return from two sports-hernia surgeries.

8. Justin Rose: His runner-up finish at Waialae showed that he is back after an injury-plagued end to 2016. From 2010-12, Rose made three cuts with a top 10 at Farmers, but he took a few years off from the event before missing the cut at Torrey in each of the past two editions.

9. Rickie Fowler: He hasn’t missed a cut since the U.S. Open and was T-36 last week in Abu Dhabi. His history at Torrey is a mixed lot: MC, T-61, MC after finishing inside the top 20 in four starts (2010-13).

10. Gary Woodland: The long-hitting Woodland has finished T-6 and runner-up in his last two PGA Tour starts, plus was T-18 last year at Torrey and is 6-for-6 making the cut in the event.

11. J.B. Holmes: Recent Farmers finishes: T-6, T-2, T-23. Hasn’t played since 11th-place finish at Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

12. Francesco Molinari: Missed cut here a year ago, but there’s no denying his form – T-12, T-4, T-4, T-6 – since winning at Italian Open.

Charles Howell III, shown at the 2016 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

13. Charles Howell III: Hasn’t finished outside top 15 in last five starts and his Farmers record is nice. Last seven starts at Torrey: T-16, T-5, T-37, T-9, T-43, T-14, T-9.

14. Daniel Berger: Was T-24 in Farmers debut two years ago before missing the cut last year. Aside from his one-shot WD at last summer’s WGC-Bridgestone, he hasn’t missed a weekend since the Honda Classic nearly a year ago. Finished T-45 in last start at Sony, but should be motivated by recent success of contemporary Justin Thomas.

15. Shane Lowry: The burly Irishman was T-13 and T-7 last two years at Torrey, but he’ll have to shake off some rust this week – he hasn’t played since T-19 at DP World Tour Championship in November.

16. Brendan Steele: Four straight made cuts for the Californian at Torrey, plus he’s been T-6 in each of his 2017 starts.

17. Byeong Hun An: Making his Farmers debut, but no reason to think he can’t perform. He was T-13 last week in Abu Dhabi after closing last year’s European Tour season with finishes of T-10 in Turkey and T-13 in Dubai.

Tiger Woods

18. Tiger Woods: His record at Torrey Pines is unmatched (seven FIO wins, one U.S. Open title), but he hasn’t exactly played much golf this last year or so. He led field in birdies last month at the Hero World Challenge.

19. Marc Leishman: Two MCs in the last four years at Torrey, but he also was T-2 at the Farmers three years ago. Has yet to finish worse than T-24 in four Tour starts this season.

20. Louis Oosthuizen: Despite having never played this event, Oosthuizen evidently feels comfortable making the trip to Torrey this week. He’s skipping the Qatar Masters, where he was T-7 last year. Solo ninth in two of his last three worldwide starts.

21. Emiliano Grillo: Before his MC last week, Grillo hadn’t missed a weekend since the 2016 Players in May He missed the cut in his Farmers debut last year. The last time he’s missed back-to-back cuts? In 2013, at the European Tour’s French Open and Scottish Open.

22. Tony Finau: Has a game that should perform at Torrey and so far he’s backed up that belief: T-18 and T-24 in his two Farmers starts. Was T-20 last time out, at Sony.

23. Pat Perez: Nobody knows the course any better, as he grew up here, and father has been tournament starter for years. Finished T-2 at Torrey in 2014, started the year with a T-3 at Kapalua and now he gets another crack at Farmers when he’s healthy and playing well.

24. Hudson Swafford: T-13 last year snapped two straight MCs at Farmers. Coming off first Tour win in Palm Springs and playing the best golf of his career.

25. Martin Laird: T-7 and T-8 last two tries at Torrey.

ALSO CONSIDERED

Jhonattan Vegas: Finished T-18 and T-11 last two years at Torrey. Throw out a T-30 at Kapalua and he’s been very solid since opening his season with a MC at the Safeway Open.

Scott Stallings: Good showing last week (T-8), a past winner here (2014) and  runner-up at 2015 Farmers.

Paul Casey: A bit of a wild card this week. Hasn’t delivered since calendar turned to 2017 (MC, T-58 in his two starts) and he’s missed his last two cuts at Torrey. But he is one of the highest-ranked players in the field.
