An Aussie is atop the leaderboard at a home event.
Katherine Kirk fired an 8-under 65 to open the action at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.
A two-time LPGA winner, Kirk has struggled mightily of late, missing five of her last six cuts on the circuit. She hasn’t won the LPGA since 2010.
But all of that didn’t seem to matter Thursday, as Kirk birdied her first three holes and four of her first five on the way to a bogey-free 65 at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club.
Kirk leads four players by two shots, as Min Lee, Jane Park, Chella Choi and Marissa Steen all sit at 6 under. Brooke Henderson is 4 under after the first round. World No. 1 Lydia Ko sits at 2 under, while Ariya Jutanugarn, ranked second, is 1 under.
