Spring preview 2018: Horizon League

As the college golf season gets ready to resume, Golfweek will preview each automatic-qualifier conference in Division I, offering picks to win, midseason All-Conference teams and more.

All of our conference previews will reside here.

Next up: Horizon League

Men

Conference championship: April 22-24, Mission Inn Resort, Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Defending champion: Cleveland State

Team rankings: Oakland (133), Cleveland State (160), IUPUI (225), Northern Kentucky (238), Wright State (248), Youngstown State (259), Detroit (275), Green Bay (280)

Midseason All-Conference team: Anton Krecic, Cleveland State (436); Jake Kneen, Oakland (526); Thomas Giroux, Oakland (596); Chris Handy, Oakland (643); Chris Rossi, Wright State (810)

What to expect: Cleveland State has won the last four titles, but Oakland boasts the highest ranking in the conference entering the spring. The Golden Grizzlies also boast three All-Conference players versus just one for the Vikings. Ultimately, Oakland’s firepower could prove the key in taking down the champs.

Pick to win: Oakland

Women

Conference championship: April 22-24, Mission Inn Resort, Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Defending champion: Cleveland State

Team rankings: Oakland (189), IUPUI (193), Cleveland State (206), Northern Kentucky (230), Illinois-Chicago (232), Green Bay (241), Youngstown State (245), Detroit (255)

Midseason All-Conference team: Aneta Abrahamova, IUPUI (324); Alexis Jones, Oakland (611); Kaylee Neumeister, Cleveland State (732); Amelie Svejda, IUPUI (868); Fiona Schmidt, Oakland (958)

What to expect: The women’s team at Cleveland State won its first ever conference title last year to provide the Vikings with a clean sweep there for the first time. But a repeat will be difficult. Cleveland State remains one of the conference’s best teams, but Oakland and IUPUI rank higher. IUPUI never had any luck in the Summit League, but the group is playing well in its maiden year in the Horizon. The Jaguars also boast the best player and good depth. The newcomers could crash the party.

Pick to win: IUPUI
