Tiger Tracker: Shot-by-shot recap of Tiger Woods' final-round 69 at Players

Tiger Woods gave us a glimmer of hope Sunday before a rough finish.

Six birdies in his first 12 holes pushed Woods into a tie for second and within four of the lead, putting the idea of an improbable comeback from 11 shots back in our heads for a moment. But he would bogey No. 14 and double the 17th after a ball in the water to kill all hopes and produce a lackluster finish.

But it was still a weekend to remember.

We followed Woods’ final round shot-by-shot. Catch up with what you may’ve missed below…

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 462 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:12 p.m. ET): A stinger iron, and this is a perfect draw down the middle.

APPROACH SHOT (6:18 p.m. ET): A nice approach here from TW, as he puts this one about 15 feet right and beyond the pin. This could be a closing birdie.

ON THE GREEN (6:22 p.m. ET): Nope, always low and right. This is not a fun finish, but we got quite a ride from Woods this weekend. A lot of positives to take from 65-69 over the final 36 holes.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-under 69 (11 under overall, T-11)

Hole No. 17: Par 3, 131 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:02 p.m. ET): Our worst fears are realized. Tiger comes up short in the water at the 17th. Yeesh. Ball was right on line, but just really short. That is deflating.

THIRD SHOT (6:04 p.m. ET): Well, after that agonizing tee shot, Tiger goes to drop zone and gets this one to stop about 12 feet beyond the pin. Good recovery, and he can still salvage bogey. But this is a tough one to swallow at the moment.

ON THE GREEN (6:07 p.m. ET): A good putt that didn’t go in. That ball tried to take the right-to-left break, but just hung out on the right edge. He taps in for there, but that’s a double bogey. Oof.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 17 (11 under overall, T-10)

Hole No. 16: Par 5, 519 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:43 p.m. ET): Tiger takes 3-wood and he liked it, but it’s a touch too far right. The ball bounds into the rough on the right. But he’ll likely still go for this in two, and there’s a decent chance the lie is good enough for him to still really go after this.

SECOND SHOT (5:45 p.m. ET): Bad break. The ball was sitting down, so Tiger has to wedge back into the fairway. He does just that. Wedge third upcoming.

THIRD SHOT (5:49 p.m. ET): That’s just so-so. Tiger seemed to pull that, and while the ball caught a slope and kicked right, it finishes about 20 feet beyond the cup. Decent birdie chance, but to this point he’s squandered a simple par 5.

ON THE GREEN (5:55 p.m. ET): That’s a disappointing par. That ball was out right and didn’t come back. Well, it was a good run, and barring disaster on the last two holes, a really promising weekend from Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 16 (13 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 458 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:22 p.m. ET): Another driver, and this is another good one. The ball lands in the left side of the fairway and rolls into the first cut. But that’s just fine and probably around 330 yards out there. It carried 303 off the tee.

APPROACH SHOT (5:27 p.m. ET): Tiger lands this one hole high and it takes a big hop forward then sticks and spins back a little. All in all, a solid shot at a tucked pin. He has 15 feet for birdie beyond the hole.

ON THE GREEN (5:30 p.m. ET): Tiger over-read that one. It didn’t come back right-to-left nearly as much as he thought. Good speed, so that’s a tap-in par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 15 (13 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 14: Par 4, 463 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:07 p.m. ET): Driver out here, and WOO that was great. Launches a cut beautifully, and the ball hits a downslope and may be 350 out there down the middle. Man this is special to watch.

APPROACH SHOT (5:13 p.m. ET): After a 354-yard drive, Tiger had just 111 yards left. And that is a massive disappointment. His wedge lands 20 feet short of the cup and then spins back off the front of the green and down a slope. After such a great drive, he now has a 15-yard chip for his third. Big opportunity missed.

AROUND THE GREEN (5:16 p.m. ET): Tiger decides to putt that one up that hill and onto the green, and the ball ends up some 7 feet below the cup. Not bad, that left for par.

ON THE GREEN (5:19 p.m. ET): Yikes. From 9 feet, his putt takes the right-to-left curve, but hits the right lip and curls out. That’s an AWFUL bogey. With Simpson birdieing 11, Tiger is now 6 back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 14 (13 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 13: Par 3, 181 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:58 p.m. ET): Not his best. Tiger leaves just too far right and the ball is long, too. He’s on the green, but he’ll have some 50 feet for birdie and will have a huge ridge to go down. A tough two-putt. But Webb Simpson bogeys No. 10, so Tiger is now within four.

ON THE GREEN (5:03 p.m. ET): Great, great lag. Tiger cozies that up 6 inches from the cup. That was way tougher than he made that look. Terrific par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 under thru 13 (14 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 299 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:43 p.m. ET): An ugly 3-wood off the tee here, as Tiger flails this well right. But he gets away with it! The ball crashes off a tree and kicks left back into the right edge of the fairway. That leaves him a manageable pitch for his second. That’s a great break after a putrid tee ball.

APPROACH SHOT (4:48 p.m. ET): Tiger had a 67-yard second shot after that amazing break, AND HE TAKES ADVANTAGE. Just perfectly judged and that ball rolls out no more than 4 feet under the pin. Not a gimme, but a very, very good chance for birdie.

ON THE GREEN (4:53 p.m. ET): Yep, buried it! Tiger is now tied for second and five back!!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 under thru 12 (14 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 11: Par 5, 551 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:24 p.m. ET): Driver here for Tiger and that is terrific down the right side of the fairway. Just what you wanted here. He can absolutely go at this one in two now.

APPROACH SHOT (4:30 p.m. ET): A 5-iron from 238 yards, and we’re in business. This ball is a little left, but just a touch. It lands on the green and rolls out to about 25 feet, left of the pin but pin-high. That’s a decent look at eagle, and boy would that produce a roar if he could bury it.

ON THE GREEN (4:36 p.m. ET): So, so close. A great putt, but it trickles by on the left by an inch or two. That would’ve been a thunderous eagle. But a simple tap-in birdie is nice. He’s now six back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 11 (13 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 424 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:08 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron stringer and this is just perfect down the left side of the fairway. He’s just in total control.

APPROACH SHOT (4:14 p.m. ET): That was PURE. This ball goes right at this left-front pin, finishes 10 feet below it and checks quickly. That looks to be 8 feet under the hole for birdie. Another great opportunity.

ON THE GREEN (4:19 p.m. ET): That was a tough read … and it doesn’t drop. The ball came off right and stayed right. The ball trickles by, and never had a chance. Disappointing, but it’s an easy par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 10 (12 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 9: Par 5, 569 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:50 p.m. ET): That’s probably a little left of where Tiger wanted it, but this driver does find the left side of the fairway. This will be an interesting second shot over trees coming up, but he can certainly go for this in two, even if it’s not the best angle.

APPROACH SHOT (3:57 p.m. ET): Tiger goes 3-iron from 256 yards and this one leaks out right. The ball lands about five yards right of the green and will leave him with a tough up and down. The ball is sitting up in the rough, but he is really short-sided with a front-right pin. We’ll see. The good lie gives him a chance here to still make birdie.

AROUND THE GREEN (4 p.m. ET): Tiger pitches this one short of the green and it hops forward but checks quicker than he wishes. Overall, a solid shot that finishes 8 feet short of the cup. Still a good birdie look.

ON THE GREEN (4:02 p.m. ET): BOOM. Walks. It. In. That’s a front-nine 32 for TW! He’s T-3 again. Simpson starts with six straight pars, which means Tiger has moved within seven of the lead. Stats from the front nine: 6/7 fairways, 5/9 greens and 10 putts.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 9 (12 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 8: Par 3, 207 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:38 p.m. ET): That was a dead-pull. Left from the start and it catches the left bunker. Tiger is probably no more than 40 feet from the pin, but this could be a really tough shot. Green runs away from him, he’s somewhat short-sided too. Could possibly be on downslope.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:44 p.m. ET): Tiger just knows where to play shots. No chance to hit this close unless he landed this 25 feet beyond the pin on a slope and have the ball come racing back down that slope toward the hole. That’s exactly what he did, and he leaves himself just 5 feet for par. A terrific mix of brilliance and execution there.

ON THE GREEN (3:48 p.m. ET): That one drops in the left side of the cup. That was a slippery one, but he got it to fall. Another big par save for TW.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 8 (11 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 440 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:23 p.m. ET): Tiger. Driver. Flushed down the middle. We love typing those words. He’s making this look so easy right now.

APPROACH SHOT (3:29 p.m. ET): A 9-iron from 143 yards … and that comes up short. Tiger finds the front right greenside bunker, he probably needed that ball to carry 2-3 more yards and it might’ve been within 10 feet of the cup. The good news is that Tiger is on the upslope in the bunker. Shouldn’t be too tough of an up and down. And that approach shows Tiger’s aggressive mindset and confidence are still in full force.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:32 p.m. ET): That’s not bad, but Tiger has this one finish about 5 feet beyond the cup. So he’s not stone-dead. An important tester here.

ON THE GREEN (3:34 p.m. ET): That was actually 7 feet, and he walked that one right in. I mean, that ball was still 2 feet from the cup when he started walking. Vintage stuff. Huge par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 7 (11 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 387 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:10 p.m. ET): That’s an iron off the tee that lands in the right rough but kicks left into the right side of the fairway. So he’s in good shape here.

APPROACH SHOT (3:14 p.m. ET): Tiger takes another one right over the flag from 135 yards and this is a beauty that lands and stops about 12 feet beyond the flag. A pretty nice look for four in a row.

ON THE GREEN (3:19 p.m. ET): Nope. That one was low and right, and the ball trickles 2 feet beyond the cup. But he cleans up just fine. An opportunity missed there, but he’s playing pretty freakin’ well.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 6 (11 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 466 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:56 p.m. ET): Tiger ROASTS a driver down the right-center of the fairway. He’ll probably have a short-iron or wedge into this green. Terrific drive.

APPROACH SHOT (3:02 p.m. ET): From just inside 140 yards, Tiger hit this one 20 feet beyond the pin but the aim was perfect. This is pretty much 20 feet directly beyond the cup. A decent shot from there, but he’s getting really aggressive, so clearly his confidence is not falling.

ON THE GREEN (3:06 p.m. ET): THREE. STRAIGHT. That one was true the whole way and dove in the left side of the cup. Holy Tiger, he’s now tied for third.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 5 (11 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 387 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:44 p.m. ET): That’s a good one down the left side of the fairway. He’ll have a wedge for his second.

APPROACH SHOT (2:49 p.m. ET): That was textbook. Tiger lands this one long and right, but on purpose to this left front pin over water. As he planned, the ball kicks and spins left, taking a slope that brings the ball all the way to 5 feet below the hole. Incredible look for back-to-back birdies.

ON THE GREEN (2:52 p.m. ET): Count it! He rolled that one in like it was nothing. Back-to-back birdies and we’re now double digits under par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 4 (10 under overall, T-6)

Hole No. 3: Par 3, 185 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:34 p.m. ET): That’s a nice shot there. Tiger lands this about 30 feet below the hole and it releases about 15 feet forward. He gets up a ridge and is about on the level with the hole, and will face a good 15-foot look for birdie.

ON THE GREEN (2:40 p.m. ET): And we’re off! Tiger drizzles that one in for a birdie, and … Here. We. Go.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 3 (9 under overall, T-9)

Hole No. 2: Par 5, 533 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:19 p.m. ET): That’s not good. Tiger takes 3-wood and he loses this one right. He actually reaches the pinestraw and it’s possible this could be in a bush. We don’t know, but if Tiger missed that bush, this will be a pitch out anyway.

SECOND SHOT (2:24 p.m. ET): Oh, Tiger caught a break. The ball stopped a yard from going into a bunch of bushes. He has to crouch down to hit this one and maybe advances it 100 yards down the fairway, but Tiger is out and will be in the fairway for his third. Remember, a yard or so farther right on that drive and Tiger is taking a penalty drop.

THIRD SHOT (2:26 p.m. ET): Tiger gets aggressive on this one, but he goes a bit long. The ball lands on the back of the green and bounds over. It should be a pretty easy up and down from there for par, but not what you want on a par 5.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:29 p.m. ET): That was a nifty chip. A beauty of a bump and run that ends up 18 inches short of the cup. He’ll finish off a big par save early.

ON THE GREEN (2:32 p.m. ET): He cleans up. A ho-hum start, but no dropped shots.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (8 under overall, T-17)

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 423 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:07 p.m. ET): Driver. Twirl. Right down the middle. Perfect opening tee shot.

APPROACH SHOT (2:12 p.m. ET): Not his best. A wedge from 108 yards lands about 20 feet short of the pin and spins a bit back just off the front edge of the green. He’ll have about 30 feet for birdie right in front there. Not ideal after that drive.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:14 p.m. ET): Tiger putts this beautifully. A perfect lag just left and beyond the hole. This will be a tap-in par.

ON THE GREEN (2:16 p.m. ET): Yep, opening par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (8 under overall, T-16)
