Tiger Woods gave us plenty to cheer about Saturday, even if the end was a buzzkill.
Woods played his first 15 holes in 6 under, and by that point he was tied for the lead at Muirfield Village. A pair of late bogeys dampened his day a bit, as Woods fired a 4-under 68 in the end. He was four back when he reached the clubhouse. Miss any of Saturday’s action?
Catch up with what you may’ve missed below…
Hole No. 18: Par 4, 484 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:22 p.m. ET): A 3-wood and Tiger went with the AGGRESSIVELY immediate twirl as he launches a low, pretty one down the left side of the fairway. Good stuff, TW.
APPROACH SHOT (3:32 p.m. ET): Tiger gets a little conservative here, as his ball finishes about 30 feet left of the flag. A slippery putt is upcoming, but a closing par is likely. Tiger is now three back of Joaquin Niemann, by the way.
ON THE GREEN (3:38 p.m. ET): Tiger had to be careful with that one, and he cozies this 3 feet under the cup. And then he misses the remainder, as he jams this one and it hits the right lip and spins out. Three-putt bogey to close. Yikes.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4-under 68 (-9 overall, T-8)
Hole No. 17: Par 4, 478 yards
OFF THE TEE (3:08 p.m. ET): That’s a 3-wood off the tee, and that’s very well done. This ball goes down the right side of the fairway, just what he wanted.
APPROACH SHOT (3:12 p.m. ET): That’s a solid one. Great distance control and left of the flag. He’s 25 feet from the cup for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (3:18 p.m. ET): Tiger took a run at this one, but the ball dives off to the right and misses. It goes a couple feet by, but Tiger makes his par just fine.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 17 (-10 overall, T-4)
Hole No. 16: Par 3, 179 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:55 p.m. ET): That wasn’t Tiger’s best swing, as he comes out of it and the ball ends up right and short. He’s on the green, though, some 45 feet from the hole. Safely on.
ON THE GREEN (3:02 p.m. ET): Buzzkill. Tiger totally misreads his first putt, and this one goes well right and long. He leaves himself 6 feet for par, and this one dives under the hole on the right. Three-putt bogey. That’s his first blemish today.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 16 (-10 overall, T-4)
Hole No. 15: Par 5, 517 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:34 p.m. ET): That was ugly. Tiger hits a snap-hook here and we’re not sure where this one is. May just be fine in the rough some 200+ yards out. Or he could be in the trees. We’ll give an update when we can.
SECOND SHOT (2:39 p.m. ET): Tiger did indeed finish in the rough. Got lucky that wasn’t worse. He chops an 8-iron out of their and will have a wedge third from the fairway. This could’ve been a disaster, and now he’s just fine.
THIRD SHOT (2:43 p.m. ET): That’s a so-so wedge. He pulls this one and the ball finishes about 20 feet left and a bit past pin high. OK mid-range look for birdie. He’s played this hole poorly so far.
ON THE GREEN (2:47 p.m. ET): Woah!! Tiger drained it! He’s tied for the lead!!! That was really impressive considering that was a downhill, swinging left-to-right 20-footer. But he drizzled that in brilliantly. Fist pump, too. So, so awesome.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 under thru 15 (-11 overall, T-1)
Hole No. 14: Par 4, 340 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:17 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron off the tee on this par 4 where you have to lay up short of a creek unless you want to get dangerous. TW does this just fine, as his ball finishes in the right side of the fairway. It’s a left pin, so good angle, too.
APPROACH SHOT (2:22 p.m. ET): OK, let’s stay calm everyone … but Tiger is likely a mere minutes from tying the lead. This ball lands at the back edge of the green but it spins and funnels down the slope all the way to 3 feet from the cup. That birdie putt is left to tie the lead.
ON THE GREEN (2:26 p.m. ET): Oh no! The ball hits the right lip and scurries 3 feet past. He makes the comebacker. But that was 3 feet, 10 inches to tie the lead and he couldn’t get it to go. Disappointing. He’s actually moved up a spot on the leaderboard, though, thanks to a Stanley bogey.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 14 (-10 overall, T-2)
Hole No. 13: Par 4, 454 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:02 p.m. ET): The 3-wood here is launched down the right-center of the fairway. He carried that nearly 290 yards. Just another A+ tee ball.
APPROACH SHOT (2:09 p.m. ET): This one from 141 yards … he dislikes it immediately. He tried to play a sawed-off draw there, but it hangs out right and short. The ball finds the green, but he’ll have some 40 feet for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (2:13 p.m. ET): Tiger hits this one a little too hard, and the ball runs by about 4 feet. But he rolls in the comebacker just fine. TW is still bogey-free.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 13 (-10 overall, solo third)
Hole No. 12: Par 3, 181 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:52 p.m. ET): Tiger gets fooled by the wind here. He goes flag hunting with an 8-iron, but the wind knocks this one down into the front bunker. TW is pretty baffled right now, but that’s not a tough bunker shot if the lie is fine.
AROUND THE GREEN (1:57 p.m. ET): That was a nice chunk-and-run that finishes 3-4 feet under the hole. A good chance to remain bogey-free.
ON THE GREEN (2 p.m. ET): Yep. No problemo there. Tiger is looking unflappable right now.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 12 (-10 overall, solo third)
Hole No. 11: Par 5, 566 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:32 p.m. ET): A bit of a surprise as Tiger goes iron off the tee on this par 5 into the wind. This is a good one down the right side of the fairway, but clearly he’s playing this as a three-shot hole.
SECOND SHOT (1:36 p.m. ET): A lay-up indeed, and Tiger puts this one on the left edge of the fairway. He’ll have a wedge third to a back-left pin.
THIRD SHOT (1:40 p.m. ET): From 99 yards, that wasn’t his best. He put this one 25 feet left and beyond the hole and it wasn’t the spinner we expected. The ball spins back a little but stops some 20 feet from the hole.
ON THE GREEN (1:45 p.m. ET): Agonizing. Tiger hit that right on line but six inches short. He taps in, but he’s not going to like par there. Especially when birdie would’ve tied the lead.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 11 (-10 overall, solo third)
Hole No. 10: Par 4, 471 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:17 p.m. ET): Tiger’s tee shot leaks right but finds the intermediate rough. He’ll be just fine there.
APPROACH SHOT (1:23 p.m. ET): Hopefully not Tiger’s first mistake. He went right at this front-right flag over a bunker, but the ball comes up a yard short. He’s in the upslope in the rough just short of the green. If the lie is fine, it shouldn’t be a tough up and down despite little green to work with.
AROUND THE GREEN (1:26 p.m. ET): Awkward stance, and Tiger actually tries to hole this, but the ball misses the cup on the right and runs 4 feet by. Not bad at all, but that’s a slippery par putt.
ON THE GREEN (1:29 p.m. ET): No problem. Tiger drains that and avoids a momentum-killing bogey.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 10 (-10 overall, solo third)
Hole No. 9: Par 4, 400 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:04 p.m. ET): These updates are becoming useless. Stinger iron off the tee, perfect down the left side of the fairway. Way down there, too, as it catches the downslope. Every shot he’s hitting is pretty much pure.
APPROACH SHOT (1:09 p.m. ET): Lol. Yep, just fires this wedge 10 feet beyond the hole and spins it 4 feet right of the cup. That shorty is left for him to go out in 5-under 31.
ON THE GREEN (1:13 p.m. ET): Yes, sir! Front-nine 31 with that bird. He hit every fairway and missed just one green on that nine.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 9 (-10 overall, solo third)
Hole No. 8: Par 3, 185 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:55 p.m. ET): This is like a video game. Pin-high, 12 feet left of the flag. We’ll keep telling you, it isn’t this easy … unless you’re Tiger Woods.
ON THE GREEN (1:01 p.m. ET): That was a misread. Tiger hits a good putt, but the ball went left at the hole rather than right and misses left. Again, though, good stroke and he’s still feeling it.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 8 (-9 overall, T-3)
Hole No. 7: Par 5, 563 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:37 p.m. ET): Tiger takes driver and this is honestly maybe in the exact center of the fairway. This is so beautiful, people.
APPROACH SHOT (12:44 p.m. ET): This was a 5-iron from 234 yards and Tiger FLEW this one 10 feet beyond the hole. He can’t get the ball to stop quickly, so it rolls out to about 50 feet. But he’s putting for eagle after another pure shot.
ON THE GREEN (12:51 p.m. ET): Some great pace there, as Tiger cozies this inside 3 feet under the hole. He cleans up his second putt and we’ve got an eagle-birdie-birdie stretch here! And he’s now just two back!
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 7 (-9 overall, T-3)
Hole No. 6: Par 4, 452 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:25 p.m. ET): Driver. Right-center of the fairway. Perfect. It’s starting to get exciting.
APPROACH (12:30 p.m. ET): Another dart, 10 feet left of the hole. Golf just isn’t this easy, man. Except for Tiger.
ON THE GREEN (12:34 p.m. ET): That was another left-to-right putt that went dead center. His putter is heating up, and his ball-striking is perfect. We’re getting excited.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 6 (-8 overall, T-5)
Hole No. 5: Par 5, 531 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:12 p.m. ET): That looked like fairway wood off the tee, and Tiger hits a pretty one that finds the right-center of the fairway. He can reach in two from there for sure.
APPROACH SHOT (12:17 p.m. ET): I mean, this is just a clinic tee to green. This ball is launched, lands 10 feet under and left of the flag and runs about 15 feet past the cup. That’ll be for eagle.
ON THE GREEN (12:21 p.m. ET): YEAH, BABY!!! We’ve got an eagle, as Tiger drizzles in this left-to-right curler. That is more like it.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 5 (-7 overall, T-12)
Hole No. 4: Par 3, 194 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:04 p.m. ET): If Tiger can buy a putt, this can be special. Another iron right at the flag. This ball finishes 15 feet under the cup. Just another pristine shot. Now he needs to start capitalizing.
ON THE GREEN (12:08 p.m. ET): Terrible putt. That was at least a few inches too far left and the wrong speed. The ball goes by 2.5 feet on the left. Tiger has no problem with his comebacker, but his putting remains a huge concern.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 4 (-5 overall, T-36)
Hole No. 3: Par 4, 375 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:49 a.m. ET): Iron off the tee and Tiger with the one-handed follow through as he gets behind on this one. He gets away with it, though, as the ball finishes in the right side of the fairway. But he’ll have a bit of a longer second than he wished.
APPROACH SHOT (11:54 a.m. ET): Tiger is NOT afraid. There’s water in front here and the pin is in front, but Tiger gets aggressive and is rewarded. His ball lands 5 feet in front of the pin, hops to within a foot of the cup, and spins back 8 feet below the hole. Great birdie opportunity upcoming.
ON THE GREEN (11:59 a.m. ET): Yikes. Another missed opportunity. Tiger with just not enough speed once again. Good line, but the ball fades off at the end and dies just right and under the cup at the end. Tough to watch.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 3 (-5 overall, T-34)
Hole No. 2: Par 4, 455 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:36 a.m. ET): Another 3-wood off the tee and we’re down the right side of the fairway again. Perfect.
APPROACH SHOT (11:40 a.m. ET): That was a beauty. From 166 yards, Tiger lands this one 20 feet below the hole, let’s it release a little, and he’ll have 10-ish feet under the hole for birdie.
ON THE GREEN (11:46 a.m. ET): Come on, Tiger. Ugh. That one was on a perfect line, but he forgets about the speed. The ball trickles to the cup and comes up an inch short dead in the heart. A disgruntled Tiger then taps in with the toe of his putter for par. That hurt, but there are still plenty of holes to go.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (-5 overall, T-33)
Hole No. 1: Par 4, 470 yards
OFF THE TEE (11:20 a.m. ET): Tiger goes 3-wood off this tee, and it’s a beauty down the right side of the fairway.
APPROACH SHOT (11:25 a.m. ET): Not Tiger’s best. He misses the green and is in the back bunker.
AROUND THE GREEN (11:29 a.m. ET): This bunker shot from beyond the green is well judged. Tiger blasts to about 4 feet. Very well could get away with par here after a poor approach.
ON THE GREEN (11:33 a.m. ET): Tiger cleans up and makes a nifty opening par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (-5 overall, T-32)
Tiger is indeed on the course. As we await his 11:20 a.m. ET tee time, here’s a look back at his second round…
