2018 U.S. Open: Hole-by-hole preview of Shinnecock Hills

It’s a tradition here pre-U.S. Open: counting down the holes until Shinnecock Hills hosts a fourth modern-era U.S. Open over its magnificent William Flynn design.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was founded in 1891, is one of the five founding member clubs of the USGA and was the first golf club in the United States to admit women. An original 12-hole golf was revised four times before the current course, designed by Flynn and built by Dick Wilson opened in 1931.

This U.S. Open is the fifth major contested at Shinnecock Hills. Here are the professional and amateur majors and international team events held there (with winners):

  • 1896 U.S. Amateur – H.J. Whigham
  • 1896 U.S. Open – James Foulis
  • 1900 U.S. Women’s Amateur – Frances C. Griscom
  • 1977 Walker Cup – United States
  • 1986 U.S. Open – Raymond Floyd
  • 1995 U.S. Open – Corey Pavin
  • 2004 U.S. Open – Retief Goosen

The 2026 U.S. Open will also be held there.

It will play at par 70 over 7,445 yards this week.

We take a look at each hole, with a flyover video on each:
