7. Peter Thomson
PGA Tour victories in 1960s: one (of six total)
Major titles in 1960s: one (of five total)
The Australian Thomson didn’t find most of his success on the PGA Tour, but he helped spread the game around the world and won 84 professional events in all around the world. His lone victory in the U.S. came at the 1956 Texas International Open, but he won the British Open five times, including in 1965. He won 17 of his total 28 European Tour titles in the 1960s, and he earned 12 of his 33 total Australasian victories in that decade. Thomson is the only golfer to have won a major three times in a row (British Open in 1954, ’55 and ’56). His British Open title in 1965 proved that he could beat an elite field in that event, after his previous British Open titles came against weaker fields when fewer Americans traveled to the event. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. Thomson died in 2018 at age 88.
