Xander Schauffele comes from 5 back to win TOC

By

The first PGA Tour event of 2019 came this week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

We followed all of Sunday’s final-round action below…

UPDATE No. 5 (9:55 p.m. ET): Schauffele is your winner!

Woodland misses a 10-footer for birdie to force a playoff to the right. It’s a one-shot win for Schauffele after an 11-under 62. That’s a five-shot comeback win. He started the day with a bogey, too!

Here’s a recap of the incredible day…

UPDATE No. 4 (9:45 p.m. ET): Schauffele hit an incredible second shot that gave him roughly 10 feet for eagle.

He missed left there, but does clean up for birdie. That 11-under 62 ties the course record, moves him to 23 under, and puts him into a one-shot lead.

Gary Woodland has the closing par 5 to play. A Woodland par or worse, and Schauffele wins. A birdie means playoff. An eagle or better means Woodland wins.

UPDATE No. 3 (9:35 p.m. ET): Well, is this getting really interesting.

Schauffele birdies the 17th to take the outright lead at 22 under, but Woodland nonchalantly comes up in the group behind and finds his own to recapture a share of the lead at 22 under heading to the last.

Both made birdie putts inside 10 feet on that hole. Now it comes down to who plays the par-5 18th best. If they play it the same, we have a playoff.

UPDATE No. 2 (9 p.m. ET): Schauffele birdies Nos. 14 and 15.

That moves him to 21 under and into the solo lead by one. He’s now 10 under in 14 holes after an opening bogey to start Sunday. Wow, what a charge.

UPDATE No. 1 (8:30 p.m. ET): Xander Schauffele is trying to fashion an epic comeback.

After an opening bogey, he’s played his next 12 holes in 8 under to rocket to 19 under and one back of Gary Woodland (through 12).

Schauffele made eagle twice in four holes from Nos. 9-12. The latter came via a hole-out eagle from the fairway. We’ll see if he can catch and pass Woodland.
