Shot-by-shot recap: Tiger Woods defeats Patrick Cantlay, advances at WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

By

Tiger Woods will advance to the weekend at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play after defeating Patrick Cantlay 4&2 on Friday.

After defeating last season’s PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Aaron Wise on Wednesday and losing to Brandt Snedeker on Thursday, the 18-time WGC champion had to go through Cantlay in his final Group 13 match. Check out our shot-by-shot analysis of the match below.

Hole 16: Par 5, 554 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger drilled this one right, but it got a nice little kick back into the fairway. Just that sorta day for the Big Cat.

APPROACH SHOT: Tiger hits this one up near the green, safe lay-up shot to score and close this one out.

AROUND THE GREEN: From 30-some yards out, Tiger nestles this one inside 10 feet and has the opportunity to end it. Cantlay was unable to hole-out, and he conceded the hole and the match.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Wins 4&2.

Hole 15: Par 4, 440 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger has all the momentum here and he pulls driver. He’s down the left side of the fairway and in good shape.

APPROACH SHOT: From 102 yards out, Tiger throws this one onto the green and it spins just off. Not bad, but certainly not his best effort there.

ON THE GREEN: Tiger went with the putter here and lagged it up near the cup, but no dice. He could have won the match if that would’ve fallen, but it’s a tie and we’re on to 16. Tiger cannot lose, only tie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-up thru 15.

Hole 14: Par 4, 453 yards

OFF THE TEE: Some cart golf here for the boys as both players right the fairway to the right.

APPROACH SHOT: Useful one here for Tiger gets to about 20 feet from the hole. Meanwhile, Cantlay is left and off the green.

ON THE GREEN: No doubt about that one, either! Tiger has Cantlay on the ropes after the birdie putt curls in the side of the hole. He’s rolling down the stretch.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-up thru 14.

Hole 13: Par 4, 297 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger rinsed his ball on No. 13 yesterday, but this one is perfectly down the middle with an iron today.

APPROACH SHOT: YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! From 82 yards out, Tiger hops this one onto the green and spins it into the cup. What an unbelievable shot. Cantlay didn’t hole out (shocker, right?) and that’s another win for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-up thru 13.

***EPIC TIGER FIRST PUMP***

Hole 12: Par 5, 571 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger got all of this one off the tee, and it was a little much. He takes a big kick through the left rough.

APPROACH SHOT: Tiger’s ball ran about 380 yards near a grandstand. He gets a drop near a cart path, and will have a little less than 200 yards to the green. He played it out to the right and brought it back to the left just a bit. He checks up just short of the green and will have a good look to get up-and-down from there.

AROUND THE GREEN: Nifty little shot from Tiger here and he rolls this one inside five feet. Great chip from TW.

ON THE GREEN: Tiger cleans up his short birdie putt. Cantlay was already in for par, meaning we have a new match leader.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 12.

Hole 11: Par 3, 173 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger went right at the pin and landed just beyond the hole. Not a bad look.

ON THE GREEN: His shot actually rolled back and to the right a bit. He’ll have about 21 feet for birdie, but Cantlay is closer, right around 10 feet. Tiger had a big right-to-left break and he played it perfectly into the hole. Pressure’s on for Cantlay, who just misses to the right.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 11.

Hole 10: Par 4, 385 yards

OFF THE TEE: B-e-a-utiful shot for Tiger to start the back. This one is right down the middle.

APPROACH SHOT: Great second shot here from Tiger. 15 feet from the hole with a chance to win back-to-back and even things up.

ON THE GREEN: His putt had the right pace but just misses the right edge. That was a good look and a tough miss. Cantlay cleans up his par and we’re moving on.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-down thru 10.

Hole 9: Par 4, 488 yards

OFF THE TEE: Perfect shot for Tiger off the tee as this one goes down the right side of the fairway and catches the slope and just keeps on rolling.

APPROACH SHOT: Tiger pulled this one a little left, but he’s on the green with 33 feet for birdie.

ON THE GREEN: He smoked this putt right through the break. No shot for that one. From six feet he saves par after the blown birdie putt and cuts into Cantlay’s lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-down thru 9.

Hole 8: Par 4, 474 yards

OFF THE TEE: Nice tee shot here for Tiger down the right side. Looks like he just caught the first-cut rough. Cantlay could be in some trouble, so advantage Tiger.

APPROACH SHOT: Well, it’s not awful. Tiger comes up short and right of the green. And to be clear, the only reason it’s not awful is because Cantlay is in real trouble.

AROUND THE GREEN: There was a ridge between Tiger and the hole, and he lightly chipped this one to catch it … except it didn’t catch. He’s still in front of the hole and now has a difficult six footer for par.

ON THE GREEN: He lightly touches this one and it just misses left. What a bad hole. Cantlay was able to save par and steal the hole

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-down thru 8.

Hole 7: Par 3, 193 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger goes pin-seeking here at No. 7 and spins it to 15 feet above and left of the cup. Cantlay’s safely 40-some feet right of the pin and in the center of the green.

ON THE GREEN: Nothing to see here. A pair of two-putt pars leads to a tie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-down thru 7.

Hole 6: Par 5, 595 yards

OFF THE TEE: Alright stop … hammer time. Tiger crushed this one down the middle of the fairway 340 yards.

APPROACH SHOT: Tiger, meet the gallery. This one goes way left into the patrons.

THIRD SHOT: Tiger was way left and had to pitch this one out, and it comes short of the green on the left. Door is wide open for Cantlay.

AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger runs this one past the green and almost off. He’s got 12 feet to the for a bad par on a hole he should’ve at least birdied.

ON THE GREEN: Nope. That’s a two-putt six for TW. Meanwhile, Cantlay’s in for four and takes the lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-down thru 6.

Hole 5: Par 4, 378 yards

OFF THE TEE: Tiger crushed this one down the right side of the fairway and just finds the fairway short and right of the green.

AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger hit this one about 5 feet too far, but it’s a nice chip at the pin. He runs about 10 feet past for a good birdie chance.

ON THE GREEN: Wow. After over-hitting on his first putt, Cantlay cans a 15-footer for birdie to put the pressure on Tiger. He misses this one left and gives the lead up again.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 5.

Hole 4: Par 3, 155 yards

OFF THE TEE: Both players find the green here at No. 4, with Tiger holding the slight advantage. Tiger will have 20 feet for birdie, while Cantlay will be closer to 30.

ON THE GREEN: Bang. Tiger’s putt makes a bee-line to the cup and drops for birdie to win the hole.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 4.

Hole 3: Par 4, 430 yards

OFF THE TEE: 3-wood here from Tiger and this one runs down the left side into the rough. Meanwhile, Cantlay hit a 325-yard bomb down the fairway.

APPROACH SHOT: Great shot from Tiger here who went flag hunting. He flies this one a few feet past the hole and lets it slide down a slope right at the pin. He almost holed it out, but had too much pace coming down the slope. He’s just outside 10 feet for birdie. Meanwhile, Cantlay went to school on Tiger’s shot and did the same thing, coming to rest 3 feet from the cup. Two solid shots from the boys there.

ON THE GREEN: Pressure’s on here for Tiger. This one was moving left-to-right, but not as much as Tiger thought. He misses wide and opens the door for Cantlay, who converted his birdie putt.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 3.

Hole 2: Par 4, 464 yards

OFF THE TEE: This one drifts a little right off the tee and finds the rough.

APPROACH SHOT: 206 yards to the hole, into the wind, with a back hole location. He gave this one a good rip and it turns nicely from right-to-left, but got caught in the wind a bit and checks up just before the green.

AROUND THE GREEN: He gave this chip a good ride and it skates across the green and few feet past the hole. Great shot.

ON THE GREEN: Cantlay just misses from 25 feet to win the hole, but has some meat left on the bone here. Tiger made his par putt as did Cantlay to tie the hole.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 2.

Hole 1: Par 4, 401 yards

OFF THE TEE: For the first time this week Tiger finds the fairway on No. 1. He’s down the left side. Nice start.

APPROACH SHOT: Not great here after a solid drive. Spun this one a bit too much with too little club. He’ll have a putt, but that should’ve been much better.

ON THE GREEN: He lags this putt from 46 feet to tap-in par range. A bogey from Cantlay gives Tiger the first hole.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 1.

Pre-round

Tiger was getting some work in early before his match vs. Cantlay.

This has nothing to do with his Friday match, but it’s still a good question via the PGA Tour based on Tiger’s miraculous shot on Thursday from under a bush.
