Shot-by-shot recap: Tiger Woods falls to Bjerregaard in epic WGC-Dell Match Play quarterfinal

By

Tiger Woods missed a short par putt at the 18th hole to lose 1 up to Lucas Bjerregaard in a thrilling WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play quarterfinal match.

Bjerregaard advances to the semifinals while Woods heads back home to prepare for his next start in the Masters. He entered the afternoon fresh of a 2&1 victory over Rory McIlroy in their Round of 16 match Saturday morning.

Here’s a shot-by-shot recap of both matches below.

Tiger Woods vs. Lucas Bjerregaard

Hole 18: Par 4, 357 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:01 p.m.): Driver for Tiger and another huge swing. Crushes it through the fairway and into the rough but the lie should be fine. Gotta think these guys will be getting aggressive with the wedges here to try and end things before extra holes. Either way we’ve all gotten our money’s worth today.

AROUND THE GREEN (6:06 p.m.): Wow. Tiger tried to pull off an epic wedge shot and landed well short of the green in a bunker. Bjerregaard goes a little long and will have 15 feet for birdie. That’s no gimme and Woods should be able to get this close from the bunker. HOW GOOD IS THIS?

ON THE GREEN (6:09 p.m.): Tiger knocks it close to about 4 feet. Now he waits to see if Bjerregaard ends it with his birdie attempt. Bjerregaard misses and Woods has a 4-footer for par to extend the match. Taking a long look at this one.

Tiger lips out and he’s eliminated after a stunning bogey at 18 to lose 1 up. What a performance from Bjerregaard. Next stop for Tiger: Augusta National.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Loses 1 up

Hole 17: Par 3, 146 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:53 p.m.): Tiger’s done messing around. After a really nice shot by Bjerregaard to 13 feet, Tiger sends a dart to five feet. Now, who wants to make a putt?

ON THE GREEN (5:55 p.m.): Bjerregaard drains it! You gotta be kidding, this dude isn’t going anywhere. Just keeps answering the bell time after time. Now Tiger has this five-footer to keep it all square going to 18. Tiger responds with a make of his own and we’re tied up. This is just too good.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 17

Hole 16: Par 5, 555 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:34 p.m.): Tiger just swung out of his shoes on that one! Huge, huge swing with the driver and carried it nearly 300 yards. That was absolutely mashed for a 42-year-old on his 33rd hole of the day, he’s just 207 yards out after a 344-yard drive. Bjerregaard in the fairway about 20 yards behind Woods’ ball.

APPROACH SHOT (5:41 p.m.): Bjerregaard muscles one onto the green and gets a loud cheer from the fans. Good on them, obviously everyone cheering for Tiger but based on what we’ve seen it seems like the folks in Austin are showing his opponent a lot of respect. Tiger throws one in there on a similar line just outside Bjerregaard’s ball and will have a lengthy eagle try coming up.

ON THE GREEN (5:45 p.m.): Not his best effort. Had to be careful with that one and left it 6-7 feet short. Bjerregaard answers by draining his eagle putt to tie the match. He was due to see one drop and does it at an ideal time. Buckle up! What a great day of golf this has been.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 16

Hole 15: Par 4, 426 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:20 p.m.): Tiger unloads on that one with driver and is in perfect position again from the middle of the fairway. Really dialing it in off the tee in crunch time. Bjerregaard right there too and hits it about 15 yards past Woods. Game on.

APPROACH SHOT (5:25 p.m.): Tiger missed long on the slope he was aiming at and is going to have a really, really speedy downhiller coming back for birdie. Bjerregaard pulls off his approach and has another chance to tie this thing up.

ON THE GREEN (5:29 p.m.): Great speed on that putt from Tiger and leaves just a few feet for par. Bjerregaard looking to win the hole and tie the match from 13 feet. He came oh-so-close but burned it just past the lip. Tiger concedes that par and finishes up his own to stay in front with three holes to play.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 15

Hole 14: Par 4, 468 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:06 p.m.): Good golf ball. Tiger pulls fairway wood and finds the short stuff. Bjerregaard played it a little looser and flirts with the rough near Tiger’s ball, but looked like it ended up just fine.

APPROACH SHOT (5:11 p.m.): Approach is just a touch long and winds up on the back fringe, but he’ll be putting from there and should be able to give it a run. Bjerregaard hits another one in there close and isn’t letting up down the stretch. He’ll have a makeable birdie try and a chance to tie things up.

ON THE GREEN (5:16 p.m.): Tiger missed well left and never gave it a chance. He’ll have to mark that one. Bjerregaard can’t get his birdie try to fall and they’ll halve the hole. Coming down to the wire here.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 14

Hole 13: Par 4, 286 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:56 p.m.): Tiger pulls driver and goes after it! On target and lands it over the green. Aggressive play there after Tiger laid up this morning, albeit in swirling wind conditions. Bjerregaard lays up and will be first to play from the fairway.

APPROACH SHOT (5:01 p.m.): Bjerregaard knocks it tight from 83 yards out, looks like 7-8 feet left for birdie. Tiger nearly chipped in from long of the green and is in for birdie. Seriously good mojo here after that hole-out eagle on Thursday.

ON THE GREEN (5:04 p.m.): Bjerregaard rattles that one home for birdie, gave him a scare but it falls to keep him within reach down the stretch.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 13

Hole 12: Par 5, 515 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:36 p.m.): Tiger stares that one down and misses the fairway, but it would have been tough to reach this green in two regardless. Bjerregaard misses wide left so everyone’s scrambling.

APPROACH SHOT (4:40 p.m.): Tiger goes with a fairway wood from a weird stance on a bunker mound and lands it to the right of the green. Should be in a good spot from there. Bjerregaard is waiting on a ruling after blasting that tee shot into the woods near what looks to be a concessions stand.

AROUND THE GREEN (4:51 p.m.): After all that, Bjerregaard escapes with a birdie. And Tiger answers by drilling his own birdie putt to keep things all square. Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar and Sergio Garcia are really jawing after a dispute over Sergio missing a short putt that hadn’t been conceded a few holes prior. This is fantastic.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 12

Hole 11: Par 3, 148 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:22 p.m.): Bjerregaard in the drink. Came up short of the green with a 7 iron and the door is wide open for Tiger. He goes long of the green and it’s not gonna be easy from there. Definitely wouldn’t trade places with Bjerregaard though.

ON THE GREEN (4:31 p.m.): Tiger leaves 16 feet for his par and now has two putts to win the hole. First one is close, he’s told to pick it up and Tiger gets the lead back with a bogey. Hey, whatever works.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 11

Hole 10: Par 4, 396 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:08 p.m.): Good golf ball. (Editors note: We heard Jason Dufner tell playing partners ‘good golf ball’ all day a while back and adopted the expression to acknowledge solid tee shots). Anyways, we’re getting a little off topic on our 27th hole of the day. Tiger pumps an iron out there and he’s safely in the fairway.

APPROACH SHOT (4:14 p.m.): Not what he wanted from 115 yards out. Might have been trying to get a kick off a slope on the left side of the green but it doesn’t really release. Leaves him with a long birdie putt and Bjerregaard is in there nice and tight. Key spot coming up.

ON THE GREEN (4:17 p.m.): Doink! Tiger’s long birdie try looked good the whole way but bounced off the flagstick and sailed long. He’s still away and drains the comebacker for par, but Bjerregaard sinks his birdie putt and we’re tied up with eight holes to play.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 10

Hole 9: Par 4, 480 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:52 p.m.): Not bad. Missed the fairway just a hair to the right but lie looks fine and shouldn’t give him any problems. Still leading the match but coming back to earth after a smoking hot start. Bjerregaard hit a great drive well past Woods, leaving about 144 yards in from the fairway.

APPROACH SHOT (3:55 p.m.): Tiger still had a long ways to go but pulls off another great iron shot from 190 yards out. Settles pin high and leaves maybe 18-20 feet for a birdie try. Bjerregaard puts it on the green but short and it looks like he’ll be putting first.

ON THE GREEN (4:02 p.m.): Woods’ birdie try ends up about a foot short. He and Bjerregaard have shorties remaining for par and knock both of them in. Onward.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 9

Hole 8: Par 4, 484 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:36 p.m.): Hooked that driver to the left and he’ll have some trees to deal with from the rough. Doubt it had anything to do with lingering frustration – Tiger’s ability to move on to the next shot and put mistakes behind him is unmatched. Doesn’t make the result any better though.

APPROACH SHOT (3:41 p.m.): Had to cut something around a tree from 200 yards out and leaves it in a pretty good spot in the fairway. Not much more he could do from there. Bjerregaard goes long on his approach to even things out a bit.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:44 p.m.): Beauty. Tiger knocks it tight from 87 yards out and should be able to knock that in for par.

ON THE GREEN (3:48 p.m.): Alright, Tiger taps that one in for par with Bjerregaard already in with a 4. No blood.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 8

Hole 7: Par 3, 182 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:24 p.m.): Tiger had 6 iron originally, but the wind really picked up and he went with 5. Tried to keep it low and out of the wind and finds the putting surface, well left of the pin. Gonna be a long putt from there. Bjerregaard hit second and went right at it, landing about 4-5 short of the cup. He’ll need to take advantage of this one because Tiger isn’t missing too many shots out there.

ON THE GREEN (3:30 p.m.): Tiger lags one up there on a good line and leaves it just a foot or two short of the cup. Bjerregaard’s birdie try lipped out and he made par, but Woods just missed a shockingly short putt to halve the hole. That came out of nowhere and was easily his worst miss of the day. Bjerregaard gets one back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 7

Hole 6: Par 5, 561 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:06 p.m.): Tiger didn’t waste any time on the tee box and pumped another driver into the fairway. All systems go. Bjerregaard missed way to the right so he’s gonna have a tough second shot from there.

APPROACH SHOT (3:13 p.m.): Well that was adventurous. Woods cut a fairway wood in there from 280 yards out. It took a favorable bounce off a slope left of the green and rolled all the way across the putting surface, settling near a greenside bunker short and right of the green. Bjerregaard had to lay up from the nasty stuff off the fairway and it’s still advantage Tiger.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:19 p.m.): Great shot out of the bunker for Tiger’s third and he’ll have just a few feet left for a fourth consecutive birdie to win the hole.

ON THE GREEN (3:20 p.m.): Juuuuust a bit outside. Burned the edge of the cup and lipped out. Bjerregaard cleans up his par to halve the hole and definitely got away with one there.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 up thru 6

Hole 5: Par 4, 369 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:55 p.m.): Just a fairway wood for Tiger and it’s quite useful. Middle of the fairway to leave a short wedge shot into the green and a chance at a third straight birdie. Bjerregaard in similar position but a little shorter and will hit first.

APPROACH SHOT (3 p.m.): Woods goes pin-seeking from 105 yards out with a wedge and hits another beauty, looks like maybe 6-8 feet left for a third consecutive birdie. Bjerregaard on the green but away by a wide margin again. Tiger looking to really step on the gas early here.

ON THE GREEN (3:04 p.m.): Tiger’s on fire. Trickles that one in for a third straight birdie and he is totally locked in. Putting on a show for the fans in Austin this afternoon.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 up thru 5

Hole 4: Par 3, 174 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:47 p.m.): Nearly aced it. Never left the flag and settled about 3 feet short. Think he’s feeling it right now? Bjerregaard also on the green but probably 30 feet out. Chance for Tiger to quickly regain the lead after dropping the first hole of the match.

ON THE GREEN (2:52 p.m.): Bjerregaard misses his lengthy birdie try below the hole, not a bad effort. Returns the favor from the second hole by making Tiger putt out and Woods rolls it in for a second consecutive birdie to win the hole and take the lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 4

Hole 3: Par 4, 445 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:36 p.m.): No problems off the tee for Tiger. Grooves another one into the short stuff. Sent a pretty strong message by making Bjerregaard finish his short par putt on the last hole. Comeback Tiger may be more talkative with playing partners, but we’re seeing that vintage icy competitor again today. It’s a welcome sight.

APPROACH SHOT (2:40 p.m.): Silky. Lands that one above the flag and let’s it roll back toward the cup. Gonna have a pretty good birdie look from there. Bjerregaard also on the green but he’s short and will get the first crack at it.

ON THE GREEN (2:43 p.m.): Buckets! Tiger walks that one in to win the hole and even the match and his old friend Scotty Cameron has been seriously dialed in today. Not a bad sign with the Masters on deck.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 3

Hole 2: Par 4, 467 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:23 p.m.): Another good one from Tiger and he puts it past Bjerregaard in the fairway. Quick turnaround probably wasn’t the worst thing in the world for Woods. The lengthy delays can be troubling when trying to wind down and get the system warmed back up again. Obviously a long day but Woods probably prefers being able to stay loose like this.

APPROACH SHOT (2:28 p.m.): Tiger misses left of the flag and it rolls down a slope even further away from the cup. Bjerregaard hit first and knocked it stiff for another good birdie look coming up. The 27-year-old from Denmark clearly ain’t scared.

ON THE GREEN (2:32 p.m.): Bjerregaard misses that birdie try and concedes Tiger’s par after a good lag. No blood.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 down thru 2

Hole 1: Par 4, 359 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:10 p.m.): Woods pounds it out there about 300 yards but misses into a bunker left of the fairway. Only has about 60 yards left but it’s a trick bunker shot from the lip. We’ll see what he does.

APPROACH SHOT (2:16 p.m.): Not terrible from there. Lands it short of the green but leaves a pretty straightforward approach. Lucas Bjerregaard hit a beauty of a drive close to the green and chipped it tight to leave about 2 feet for birdie.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:18 p.m.): Tiger gave it a run but just misses the cup and will have an opening par. Bjerregaard trickles his downhill birdie attempt into the back of the hole to take the early lead. Solid statement from Tiger’s relatively unknown opponent and Woods trails for the first time today after never falling behind against Rory.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-down thru 1

Round of 16 match vs. Rory McIlroy

Tiger Woods drained a 13-foot par putt on No. 17 to close out a 2&1 victory over Rory McIlroy in the Round of 16 match Saturday at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

We’ll be back to track every shot from Woods’ quarterfinal match against Lucas Bjerregaard this afternoon. In the meantime, here’s a shot-by-shot recap from Woods’ victory over McIlroy.

Hole 17: Par 3, 133 yards

OFF THE TEE (1:15 p.m.): Tiger is living on the edge. Missed the green short and stayed on the good side of the red stakes by inches at most. McIlroy short but on the green and probably needs to make a long birdie putt here in order to extend the match.

AROUND THE GREEN (1:19 p.m.): Woods’ lie was worse than it looked initially and he couldn’t do much more than skip something up there to 15-20 feet. So par may be enough for McIlroy to take this thing to the 18th after all.

ON THE GREEN (1:20 p.m.): ONIONS! Rory’s birdie try burns the edge and Tiger drains his 13-footer to win the match. Got a little dicey there on the back nine but Woods closes it out and advances to face Lucas Bjerregaard in the quarterfinals. We’ll be here to track that one shot-by-shot as well.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Wins, 2&1

Hole 16: Par 5, 571 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:55 p.m.): Driver twirl from Rory as he crushes another one down the middle of the fairway. Tiger missed it left, looks like it may have ended up in a bunker. Either way it’s advantage Rory yet again and this match has delivered all morning. Thrilling stuff.

SECOND SHOT (1 p.m.): Just a nasty spot for Woods and all he can do is poke something out of the bunker back into the fairway. He’s still away after a 395-yard drive (!) from Rory.

APPROACH SHOT (1:02 p.m.): Really good. On the green from 200-plus yards out and gives himself a chance at birdie. Rory only had 173 yards in for his second shot and made a big mistake, missing right into a bunker. Probably needs to get up and down to win the hole and tie this thing up.

ON THE GREEN (1:06 p.m.): McIlroy actually stayed out of the bunker into a horrible spot right above it on a slope. He pops it up and goes way over the green, across the cart path and out of play. What a waste of a perfect drive, this has been a total disaster for McIlroy ever since. He had to take a penalty stroke and return to the original spot, hitting his fifth shot from there. Popped that one up into a bunker. This is getting hard to watch. Can’t hole out for bogey from the bunker and concedes the hole. Shocking turn of events and after looking primed to tie the match, he’s dormie with two holes to play.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 up thru 16

Hole 15: Par 4, 434 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:37 p.m.): Wind and a long wait on the tee not an issue for McIlroy, who crushes one down the fairway with driver. Tiger backed off his shot several times due to big gusts and eventually pulled the trigger with a big miss to the left. That’s not going to be fun and McIlroy is in position to even this thing up. Quite a turn of events.

APPROACH SHOT (12:43 p.m.): Tiger ended up 196 yards out in the rough, just off the cart path amid a throng of fans. And he pulled off an amazing recovery shot. Looked good from the jump and landed in the middle of the green for a look at birdie. Starting to pull off those must-see shots with more regularity these days – the bunker shot in Mexico, left-handed par save Thursday, hole-out eagle Friday, etc. Pretty cool to see. McIlroy tried to get cute and just missed it, his ball landing near the flag before rolling off the green into a downslope.

ON THE GREEN (12:48 p.m.): Tiger had 30 feet for a tricky downhill birdie putt and played it extremely safe. Marks that one and will have maybe 5 feet left for par. Rory chips it up there for a conceded par and Woods walks in his par putt with confidence to stay 1 up. Huge make.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 15

Hole 14: Par 4, 447 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:22 p.m.): Fairway wood off the tee and he’s up the right side of the short stuff, looks just fine. Weather has taken a serious turn for the dark and stormy as everyone scrambles to put on an extra layer or two.

APPROACH SHOT (12:27 p.m.): Identical shots. Rory went first and landed onto the false front, his ball spinning back off the green. Woods’ ball did the exact same thing and it’s a chipping contest from here. Some seriously nasty-looking clouds hanging over the green at the moment.

ON THE GREEN (12:30 p.m.): Tiger and Rory both chip it close. Tiger tells Rory to pick it up, Rory makes Tiger putt out from about 2 feet. He cleans it up with no issue to remain 1 up entering the closing stretch.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 14

Hole 13: Par 4, 279 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:08 p.m.): It’s a layup for Tiger and he goes with an iron. Right down the center of the fairway and safe. McIlroy went with a fairway wood and drove it right up close to the green, but Tiger didn’t stray from the game plan.

APPROACH SHOT (12:13 p.m.): Wind started picking up like crazy as soon as Woods got over his ball and that totally changed the dynamic of the shot. Made it way more difficult and he carries the ball long of the green. In trouble here, rain starting to fall and Rory suddenly with a golden opportunity to cut his deficit to one.

AROUND THE GREEN (12:14 p.m.): Rory chips that one on a decent line and goes a little long, leaving about 5-6 feet for birdie. Woods runs his third shot long as well and he’s still away. Needs to make this par putt to have any chance at halving the hole.

ON THE GREEN (12:18 p.m.): Woods drains his par putt to add some pressure on Rory’s birdie try. But Rory makes it anyways to pick up his second consecutive hole. We got a ballgame!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 up thru 13

Hole 12: Par 5, 586 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:48 a.m.): Tiger misses the fairway with driver and ends up in a rightside bunker. Won’t be able to go after the green in two. McIlroy is in better shape in the fairway and needs to get aggressive here if he hopes to keep this thing going much longer.

APPROACH SHOT (11:53 a.m.): Tiger couldn’t do much from there, just a layup into a nice spot on the fairway to leave a wedge in. Rory going after it from 242 yards out and hits the green, settling just on the fringe. Seems like Woods can pretty much shut the door on this thing if he hits his third shot close.

AROUND THE GREEN (11:57 a.m.): Tiger not thrilled with that one either, but it’s on the green and he’ll have a mid-range birdie putt. McIlroy nearly chips in from the fringe and Woods is going to make him clean that up for birdie.

ON THE GREEN (12 p.m.): Woods gave it a run but just burned the cup. That leaves him 6-7 feet to clean up for par and he misses the comebacker. First bogey of the day for Tiger and first time he’s dropped a hole to Rory. Not over yet.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 up thru 12

Hole 11: Par 3, 200 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:40 a.m.): Nice, safe play from Tiger into the center of the green. Rory misses long and this thing could get away from him in a hurry if he doesn’t chip it close from there.

ON THE GREEN (11:44 a.m.): Solid lag again from Woods and he’ll pick that one up for par. Putting has been on point all morning. McIlroy put a good stroke on it from off the green and Woods tells him to to pick it up as well. Onward.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 up thru 11

Hole 10: Par 4, 368 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:26 a.m.): Just an iron for Tiger at this short par 4 and he’s in the fairway yet again. He hasn’t been spectacular today, but refusing to give an inch and not making any mistakes. Taking care of business and letting Rory putt his way out of it so far.

APPROACH SHOT (11:31 a.m.): Tiger had 100 yards in and thought it was gonna be all over the flag. Didn’t quite pull it off though and lands it beyond the flag. McIlroy doesn’t do much better and his wedge shot ends up right near Tiger’s. Looks like Tiger will probably be putting first but it’s close.

ON THE GREEN (11:34 a.m.): Another nice display of touch from Tiger on those lag putts. Inches away from 32 feet and Rory tells him to pick it up. Doesn’t make his birdie try either and Tiger is gonna make him putt that one from just a foot or two. And Rory lips out! Stone. Cold. Smart move from Tiger and he’s in serious control now.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 up thru 10

Hole 9: Par 4, 468 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:12 a.m.): In business. Tiger pounds another driver into the fairway and catches a big downhill slope, that’s a 364-yard drive leaving just 90 yards in. McIlroy opts to go with a fairway wood and his is just fine too, not as far as Tiger but a good chance to stick something close and put the pressure on.

APPROACH SHOT (11:18 a.m.): Nice one from McIlroy to set up another really good birdie look. Tiger landed his wedge shot long and didn’t get a whole lot of check on it, he’ll be away and not thrilled with the final result there.

ON THE GREEN (11:20 a.m.): Tiger comes up a half-rotation short on a really quick birdie try from 15 feet. Great roll but a par nonetheless. And he gets away with it after McIlroy misses a birdie try from 7 feet. Ballstriking has been great all day but Rory does not look confident with the putter as these guys make the turn.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-up thru 9

Hole 8: Par 4, 494 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:55 a.m.): Tiger smokes a driver up the left side of the fairway to set the tone. He seems very comfortable with honors on the tee the past few holes. Then Rory reminds us he is not lacking distance and puts it about 15 yards past Woods’ ball in the fairway. These guys aren’t missing shots right now.

APPROACH SHOT (11:02 a.m.): Woods was 192 yards out from a sidehill lie and lands it in a dicey spot on the right side of the green, the ball  bouncing into the rough. Rory misses to the left and fails to take advantage from the middle of the fairway yet again. Also had their first long wait of the day from the fairway. Lucas Bjerregaard and Henrik Stenson aren’t exactly the speediest players on the planet to say the least.

AROUND THE GREEN (11:06 a.m.): McIlroy goes with putter and pulls off a really nice shot from off the green, close to tap-in range. Woods pops a wedge from off the green and it’s not his best effort. Leaves it well short and will have to make a putt here to stay 2 up.

ON THE GREEN (11:09 a.m.): Woods walks it in for par, really nice putt. Walk-in might have been a little premature but the ball did drop on the edge of the cup and Woods has a huge grin on his face walking off the green. Looks like he conceded McIlroy’s par putt and a nice halve for Tiger there.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 up thru 8

Hole 7: Par 3, 209 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:45 a.m.): Not bad. Tiger well short of the flag but hangs on to the front of the green and you’ll take that all day on this hole. Rory answers with a tight iron shot that lands pin high, really good look at birdie and a chance to get one back after two consecutive birdies from Tiger. Just what he needed.

ON THE GREEN (10:50 a.m.): Pretty routine lag from Woods there from 38 feet and Rory concedes a short birdie putt! Surprising move there considering Woods still had about 3 feet remaining. And Rory misses his short birdie putt after conceding. That’s just not smart considering Woods has missed a few of those shorties over the past couple months. Probably makes it anyways but we’ll never know. No blood.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-up thru 7

Hole 6: Par 5, 597 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:30 a.m.): Got a little leaky with the driver there and Tiger misses the fairway to the right. Rory hits the fairway with another nice tee shot so he’ll have a slight advantage on the approach.

APPROACH SHOT (10:34 a.m.): Picks it clean out of a bunker with fairway wood and lands it just short and left of the green into a tucked right pin. Straightforward chip from there and another good birdie chance. McIlroy went a little long and left of the green from an ideal spot in the fairway, probably wanted to capitalize a little more than that but it won’t hurt him.

AROUND THE GREEN (10:39 a.m.): Hello! Tiger plays it perfectly off a backside ridge and got the ball rolling straight at the cup. Nearly jarred it. Just a few feet left for birdie. McIlroy’s third wasn’t too bad but sailed past the cup and he probably needs to sink a 12-15 footer for birdie in order to avoid falling 2 down.

ON THE GREEN (10:42 a.m.): Yessir. Woods with a confident stroke to drain his short birdie putt after a Rory miss. So Woods wins back-to-back holes and hasn’t really blinked yet, while Rory has lost a bit of strut in his step.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-up thru 6

Hole 5: Par 4, 343 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:19 a.m.): Not bad at all. Confident swing with the driver after Rory landed his tee shot just short of the green, and Woods answers with another on-target drive. It’ll be a chipping contest from here and feels like we’re due for one of these guys to scare the cup.

AROUND THE GREEN (10:24 a.m.): Rory goes first and sticks it close, he shouldn’t have any trouble finishing off a birdie from there. Tiger answers with a beaut’ of his own and put it inside of McIlroy’s ball. Looks like a pair of birdies coming up but we’ll see if there are any signs of nerves with either putter.

ON THE GREEN (10:27 a.m.): Wow. Surprising miss by Rory from 7 feet and Woods needs to capitalize. He does just that with a firm birdie roll and Tiger strikes first. This is fun.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-up thru 5

Hole 4: Par 3, 189 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:07 a.m.): That. Will. Work. Best swing of the day and a great look at birdie, put it in the proper window to land pin high and looks to be about 10 feet for birdie from there. McIlroy put a good strike on it as well but was just a touch short, his ball rolled back to leave a lengthier uphill birdie putt. Tiger definitely thinking about taking the early advantage here.

ON THE GREEN (10:13 a.m.): Man. Tiger played a lot of break on that 9-footer and missed it on the pro side. Another par to keep things all square and Tiger will be kicking himself on the way to the fifth tee.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 4

Hole 3: Par 4, 423 yards

OFF THE TEE (9:55 a.m.): Beauty. Pumps one out there with a wood to the right side of the fairway and will have no complaints as he walks up to the ball. McIlroy looked concerned about his ball but it takes a favorable hop off a hill and bounces into the fairway in a similar position. Both players are about 150-160 yards out. Let’s see who’s feeling good with the short irons early.

APPROACH SHOT (9:59 a.m.): Nicely done. Lands it long into a front pin location, ball rolls off a mound near the back of the green toward the flag and settles about pin high, maybe 15 feet. McIlroy puts it a few feet outside of that and will give Woods a nice look on their birdie tries.

ON THE GREEN: Nice roll from Rory but he leaves it an inch or two short. So Tiger got a nice preview of his birdie try on the same line but he misses just below the cup. Left one out there at the third as our two combatants trade pars yet again.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 3

Hole 2: Par 4, 461 yards

OFF THE TEE (9:42 a.m.): McIlroy tees off first and finds a fairway bunker, so Woods adjusts and takes a fairway wood. Didn’t like it and missed the fairway to the left but the lie shouldn’t be too bad.

APPROACH SHOT (9:48 a.m.): Had to hit off an awkward sidehill lie and gets a clean strike, onto the green and 20 feet past the hole. Rory hits into a frontside bunker and it’s advantage Tiger.

ON THE GREEN (9:52 a.m.): Another narrow miss on the birdie try and Woods gets in for par. Rory left himself 12 feet for par and drills it, so that’s a big halve for McIlroy and gives him the early momentum.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 2

Hole 1: Par 4, 401 yards

OFF THE TEE (9:31 a.m.): Big swing of the driver for Tiger and he pipes one down the left side of the fairway. Rory right there as well and both guys will have about 50 yards in to get this thing started. Time to show off with the wedges.

APPROACH SHOT: (9:37 a.m.): Bad bounce short of the flag and it skips well past the flag, leaving about 20-25 feet for birdie. McIlroy went long too but should get a good look at his roll after Tiger putts.

ON THE GREEN (9:40 a.m.): Good pace but just misses the line, McIlroy gives him that putt. McIlroy missed his birdie try as well so we’re off with a pair of pars.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Tied thru 1

Pre-round

Tiger Woods is set to square off with Rory McIlroy in an epic Round of 16 matchup at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas.

The match gets underway at 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday and Woods is a heavy underdog in Las Vegas, listed at +130 odds. He got to the weekend thanks to an impressive comeback win over Patrick Cantlay Friday, which included a hole-out eagle to spark the turnaround and advance in his first Match Play appearance since 2013. Woods also defeated reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Aaron Wise on Wednesday and lost to Brandt Snedeker Thursday for a 2-1-0 group play record.

McIlroy had no problem getting past his group, posting a 3-0-0 record against Luke List, Justin Harding and Matt Wallace.
