British Open: Meet Shane Lowry's wife and daughter

Shane Lowry fizzled after holding a 4-shot lead entering the final round of the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont.

“No matter what I shoot tomorrow, my two-year-old will be there waiting for me,” Lowry said Saturday at the British Open.

Lowry shot a 1-over 72 Sunday, good enough to finish at 15-under par 269 and stand six shots clear of Tommy Fleetwood and everyone else to win the 148th Open Championship.

And as Lowry predicted, his 2-year-old daughter Iris was there on the 18th green waiting for dad when it was all over. Iris was with her mom and Lowry’s wife, Wendy Honner.

“Actually, look, that means everything, doesn’t it? We have one from Abu Dhabi this year, and we’re going to have another one. My wife knew no matter what to have her there waiting for me because if things didn’t go to plan, at least she would have consoled me a little bit. To have her there, winning, obviously it’s very special,” Lowry said.

He then offered a glimpse into the future, which is scheduled to include Lowry playing in the Open Championship through 2046. Lowry’s 60th birthday falls on April 2, 2047.

“I’m going to be coming back on another 27 Opens to play (laughter). She’s going to be nearly 30 when I play my last one. That’s going to be nice. Look, I’ll be able to show her, she’ll be able to see those pictures in years to come and it will be a nice memory to have,” he said.

Lowry and Honner first met during a “random night out” in 2012.

Honner, a nurse, and Lowry have been together ever since. Lowry proposed in Dubai in 2014. The couple got married in New York in 2016, the week after the Masters.

They kept the wedding size limited. “The guest list [was spiraling] and I get stressed very easily, so we decided the big white wedding at home was not what we wanted,” Lowry told the Irish Independent.

Their daughter, Iris, was born in March 2017.

Honner and Baby Iris witnessed Lowry win the HSBC Golf Championship in Abu Dhabi this past January. They showed up this week for the third round of the Open and Iris was holding her dad’s hand before play began Saturday.

Lowry, who grew up 180 miles to the south of The Open host course Royal Portrush, kept his cool throughout the final round as he entered the day with a four-shot lead over Fleetwood. As the gallery following Lowry grew throughout the day, he remained stead and found the fairways when needed.

And he never faltered.

His winnings include the coveted Claret Jug, $1.935 million, a lifetime exemption in The Open until his 60th birthday and, perhaps most importantly, a hug from Honner and Baby Iris.
