Hole 18: Par 4, 450 yards

OFF  THE TEE (3:07 p.m.): Crushed a fairway wood there and it runs all the way into the rough. Surprising to see that and it leaves 152 yards to the hole.

APPROACH SHOT (3:12 p.m.): Good one. Lands it hole-high and leaves himself a decent chance at a closing birdie. That would be a big boos after giving two shots back over the last two holes.

ON THE GREEN (3:16 p.m.): Negative. Sent it past the hole and he’ll have to mark that to save par. Been that kind of week so far. But he cleans it up and finishes with a par for a second consecutive 1-under 71. It’ll be another early tee time Saturday.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under 71 (2 under overall)

Hole 17: Par 3, 182 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:56 p.m.): Got aggressive with that one and went right at the flag, but he misses long. Not happy with himself. Maybe pressing a little bit there and it’s gonna be a tough up-and-down from behind the green.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:59 p.m.): Yikes. Just barely got that one on to the fringe and nearly left it in the rough from the bunker. Could have been worse but still needs to drain a long one here to save par.

ON THE GREEN (3:03 p.m.): Nope. Second consecutive bogey and a costly error from Tiger off the tee. Stumbling at the finish line here after a great start to the back nine.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 17 (2 under overall)

Hole 16: Par 4, 475 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:36 p.m.): Nothing wrong with that one. Another really good tee ball and we’ve seen plenty of those today. Can he make it three in a row?

APPROACH SHOT (2:43 p.m.): Whoops. Missed short and it’s in the bunker. Gonna be a tough up-and-down for there and will definitely stall the momentum he had going.

AROUND THE GREEN (2:46 p.m.): Couldn’t do much from there on a blind shot from the sand, blasted it long of the flag and will be looking to save par from about 10-12 feet.

ON THE GREEN (2:50 p.m.): Just a tad too soft and it slips below the cup. So it’s another bogey and looking like another ho-hum round with two to play.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 16 (3 under overall)

Hole 15: Par 4, 320 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:22 p.m.): Just an iron here and it’s a nice, low cut to the center of the fairway. Another wedge coming up and another chance to start making something happen here now seven shots off the lead.

APPROACH SHOT (2:28 p.m.): Not his best from inside 100 yards. On the green, below the hole and definitely has a look at birdie, but he was trying to stick something close there.

ON THE GREEN (2:32 p.m.): Hey hey!! Drains that one from 19 feet and we’ve got something cooking here. Second straight birdie and things are looking much better than they did an hour ago. Now T-28 and trending up.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 15 (4 under overall)

Hole 14: Par 5, 597 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:01 p.m.): Pure. Seems like a long time ago all the talk about Tiger’s game boiled down to accuracy issues off the tee. Hasn’t been the case for some time and it’s another FIR on the day.

APPROACH SHOT (2:08 p.m.): Just a layup here from 322 yards out and advances it up the right side of the fairway. Pretty standard. Now a chance to show of the wedge game.

THIRD SHOT (2:14 p.m.): Good one from 104 yards out. Lands past the hole with a bit of check, gives himself another solid birdie look. Time to make one of these things.

ON THE GREEN (2:18 p.m.): Yessir! Finally gets a significant putt to fall, this one from 12 feet for birdie. So he plays the par-5s in 3 under today and gets to 3 under overall. That puts him T-36 at the moment. Nothing spectacular at all the past two days but he’s keeping it together.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 14 (3 under overall)

Hole 13: Par 3, 241 yards

OFF THE TEE (1:49 p.m.): Good one. Just about pin-high, center of the green. Anything on the putting surface is a solid shot today with the tees this far back.

ON THE GREEN (1:55 p.m.): Missed a little long and high but taps in for par immediately after. Weird day out there, not a lot of mistakes but very few highlights.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 13 (2 under overall)

Hole 12: Par 4, 465 yards

OFF THE TEE (1:30 p.m.): Another one right down the middle. Time to get it going. If he finishes the day at 2 under it’s gonna be really tough to do enough to get inside the top 30 for East Lake. Think we’ll see some aggressive approach shots down the stretch.

APPROACH SHOT (1:36 p.m.): Starting to get it going. Another tight iron shot from 147 yards out, looks like he stuck it inside 10 feet. Now – can he finally make a putt?

ON THE GREEN (1:40 p.m.): Missed it on the pro side. Ouch. Good roll just a hair off. Disappointing par and another missed opportunity.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 12 (2 under overall)

Hole 11: Par 4, 443 yards

OFF THE TEE (1:16 p.m.): Smooth swing with a fairway wood and that’ll work. Keeps putting himself in position off the tee, he’s just gotta take advantage of it over these next few holes if he wants to have a chance over the weekend.

APPROACH SHOT (1:21 p.m.): That’s more like it! Sticks it to a few feet and if he misses that one for birdie we’ve got serious problems. Best shot of the day by far and maybe just the spark he needed.

ON THE GREEN (1:27 p.m.): Taps that one in for birdie. Sometimes you just need one shot to kick a round into gear, let’s see if Tiger can do that and finish with a couple birdies down the stretch.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 11 (2 under overall)

Hole 10: Par 5, 562 yards

OFF THE TEE (1 p.m.): Smoked that one low with a driver and he’s in good position to start the back nine. Looking for his third birdie of the day on the par 5s at Medinah.

APPROACH SHOT (1:04 p.m.): Missed it to the right again, control has been off with those fairway woods today. Got a nice bounce from someone in the gallery though, still in the rough but keeps it closer to the green. We’ll see how the lie is.

AROUND THE GREEN (1:09 p.m.): Gets it in the vicinity. Long of the flag but well within his range. Maybe 8-10 feet left for a birdie here.

ON THE GREEN (1:12 p.m.): Nope. Same old story. Not doing himself any favors on the greens and frustration has to be setting in. So far doing a good job of not forcing the issue, we’ll see if that keeps up.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 10 (1 under overall)

Hole 9: Par 4, 436 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:42 p.m.): Healthy crack with the driver and a little twirl on the finish. Finds the left side of the fairway no problem. We’ve said it before, but no one bounces back from a mistake without letting it creep into the next shot better than Tiger.

APPROACH SHOT (12:47 p.m.): One of the best irons of the day. Short of the flag and maybe 15-20 range for birdie, but at least he’s got a putt at it.

ON THE GREEN (12:52 p.m.): Good stroke but burned the edge once again. Hasn’t really been able to get anything to fall so far this week. Treading water.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 9 (1 under overall)

Hole 8: Par 3, 184 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:30 p.m.): Not terrible. Little long and right, into the thick stuff, Tiger doesn’t love it. But shouldn’t be too much trouble over there. Just plodding along, still feels like he has plenty of opportunities to score out here.

AROUND THE GREEN (12:35 p.m.): Couldn’t do much more than chop it out and the ball doesn’t release. Leaves it well short and now has 12 feet to save par. Just no juice in this round so far.

ON THE GREEN (12:37 p.m.): Missed it low. Second time he’s followed a birdie with a bogey and we’re back to even par on the day. That hurts.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 8 (1 under overall)

Hole 7: Par 5, 615 yards

OFF THE TEE (12:11 p.m.): Nothing wrong with that one. Crushed it 320-plus yards to the left side of the fairway, taking a little frustration out after that bogey at six. Still has about 294 yards to the flag but in good position to start.

APPROACH SHOT (12:16 p.m.): Had the distance but missed wide right of the green. Caught plenty of it and looked like it stayed out of the bunkers, so he should be able to do something from that spot. And it’s still hard to wrap our brains around these guys going at 615-yard par 5s in two without issue. Dudes are playing a different game out there.

AROUND THE GREEN (12:23 p.m.): Useful. Very useful. Gets it out of the rough and leaves around 5-7 feet for birdie. Absolute must-make here.

ON THE GREEN (12:26 p.m.): Actually just inside five feet and he drains it. Another birdie and taking care of business on the par-5s so far today. Good bounce-back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 7 (2 under overall)

Hole 6: Par 4, 496 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:54 a.m.): Didn’t like it. Got away from him a little bit with the driver and the ball drifts into the gallery, looks like some thick rough over there on the right side of the fairway. Time to bear down, don’t want to give that birdie back right away.

APPROACH SHOT (12 p.m.): Big hack out of some gnarly rough and does well just to get it up near the green. Still short of the putting surface but looks to have a good angle from there and a pretty straightforward chip shot. Good job getting out of trouble.

AROUND THE GREEN (12:03 p.m.): Maybe not as straightforward as it appeared, ball came out hot and raced past the hole. Leaves an uncomfortable distance to save par, looks to be about 8-10 feet. Not great.

ON THE GREEN (12:06 p.m.): Didn’t break and that par try slides past. Deflating bogey for sure and he needs to get the flatstick going or the leaders will be getting away from him in a hurry.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 6 (1 under overall)

Hole 5: Par 5, 524 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:35 a.m.): Beauty with the driver and he’s had no problems off the tee so far today. Now would be a good time to put that first circle on the scorecard.

APPROACH SHOT (11:42 a.m.): Had 247 yards with a fairway wood and overcooked it a little with a draw. Distance looked good but settled into the left rough, looking to get up and down from there for birdie.

AROUND THE GREEN (11:47 a.m.): Chipping has been on point through 23 holes this week and another good one there. Can’t be more than a foot or two left for his birdie try.

ON THE GREEN (11:51 a.m.): Yessir. Tiger gets it done with a birdie and so far so good. That’ll get him inside the top 40 for the time being.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 5 (2 under overall)

Hole 4: Par 4, 465 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:20 a.m.): Another driver here and that is absolutely crushed. 299-yard carry and straight as an arrow. ShotTracer was invented for drives like that. Now, let’s see if he can put it to good use.

APPROACH SHOT (11:26 a.m.): Safe shot to the center of the green, not getting too aggressive on a tucked pin. Almost 40 feet left for this birdie try.

ON THE GREEN (11:29 a.m.): Good lag there, leaves it just below the hole inside a foot. Gonna mark but we’ll go ahead and give him that one for a fourth consecutive par to start. Onward.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 4 (1 under overall)

Hole 3: Par 4, 412 yards

OFF THE TEE (11:07 a.m.): Just a fairway wood and he gets away with one there, landed in the left rough but took a hard bounce onto the first cut. Should be sitting up nicely and doesn’t look like there will be any issues on the second shot.

APPROACH SHOT (11:10 a.m.): Tad long and he’s in the back rough. Just a little rusty with the wedges and short irons and that’s the difference in Woods’ game of late – when he got hot last season those shots were consistently stuffed tight. He can still do enough to hang around, but needs to get those wedges dialed in if he wants to make a run this weekend.

AROUND THE GREEN (11:13 a.m.): Pops it up out of the thick stuff and the ball scoots past the hole. Short part putt coming up that you’d expect him to make without issue.

ON THE GREEN (11:16 a.m.): Cleans it up no problem and it’s been an uneventful start compared to yesterday, when he was 2 under thru 3. Maybe a steadier start will leave more in the tank down the stretch.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 3 (1 under overall)

Hole 2: Par 3, 185 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:54 a.m.): Full club short there, carried it about 170 yards and just barely over the water to the front of the green. Safe, but a bit of a scare there out of the gate. Lengthy putt coming up.

ON THE GREEN (11:01 a.m.): Birdie try misses long and Tiger leaves himself 6 feet for par. Calmly drops that one to save par though and we’re on to the third with no damage done. Steady par-par start.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (1 under overall)

Hole 1: Par 4, 423 yards

OFF THE TEE (10:42 a.m.): Perfect. Splits the fairway with a driver, smooth swing and we’re off and running. Made birdie here yesterday, let’s see if he can do it again.

APPROACH SHOT (10:44 a.m.): Nicely done. Leaves it below the hole from 141 yards out. Should have a good chance to sink that one. Sun is shining and it looks pretty pleasant in the Chicago ‘burbs this morning.

ON THE GREEN (10:49 a.m.): No dice. Routine par to start as that birdie try from 14 feet slides past the edge. On to the shortest par-3 on the course today.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (1 under overall)

Pre-round

Woods shot 1-under 71 Thursday in a solid-if-unspectacular round, bouncing back from an oblique injury which forced him to withdraw from last week’s Northern Trust in New Jersey.

Everything looked to be in order from a health perspective and Woods was swinging freely throughout the afternoon. He’s trying to get inside the top 30 in the FeeEx Cup standings by week’s end in order to qualify for the Tour Championship at East Lake, but he’ll need to make some serious moves over the next three days in order to get there.

Woods tees off at 10:37 a.m. for Friday’s second round alongside Billy Horschel and C.T. Pan.
