DORAL, Fla. – Nick Watney’s fourth round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship never got to the first tee. The 2011 winner of this tournament withdrew during his warm-up session. He cited a sore back after hitting a few 7-irons a mere 110 yards.
After receiving treatment in the fitness trailer, Watney was still wincing as he got into a car to be driven to the airport. He had moved up his flight to get to his home in Austin, Texas, where his wife, Amber, is expected to deliver the couple’s first child, a daughter, sometime Monday.
“I’m shattered,” he said. “I love this place. I’ve finally started playing well, played real well on the back nine yesterday. I was looking forward to the round.”
Coming off a T-24 at the Honda, his best finish of the season, Watney had blitzed the back nine at Doral in a bogey-free, 3-under 33. He said that after a few weeks of struggles with the putter something “clicked” as he shot 71, got to 2 under and started the fourth round tied for 14th, at 2-over just six off the lead.
